Did it actually get to Paddington? It was an incident like that that I heard about on that sort of timeframe, but I thought Pacers were banned east of Reading so it terminated there.

Who said Pacers were banned east of Reading ? I had a very close link with the movement at the time and it wouldn't have gone if it hadn't been cleared. It was the talk of the office the next morning.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think back then route clearance was done on a class by class basis back then. I think Pacers are C1 so would be cleared as the route was cleared for C1

It’s a shame it’s not like that, now. It’d make new train introduction a lot easier.

Nowadays a new unit is only shewn with Route availability to cover the routes they are intended to work over. They can, however, be "cleared" over another route retrospectively should the requirement arise. As an example, Class 170s have only recently been cleared to work between Bristol Parkway and Bristol Temple Meads not that they were physically unable to work over the route but just not shown due to no the fact there was originally no requirement.

Am I right in thinking the Skippers were painted in the "Chocolate and Cream" livery when first introduced in the West Country?
Yes, and it survived for a few years when they came north
At one stage we had Pacers working through Lancaster with both versions of the Provincial livery, Mersey yellow, Manchester orange, GW chocolate and cream, and also West Yorks red and cream. On some days you could see the lot

Just in case you don't know they are banned from working on any sections of third rail in case the pistons may contact the live rail causing a power surge.
No they aren't just a rumour. They go through platform 2 at Hunts Cross on a daily basis, sometimes use platform 7 at Chester and are cleared to use platform 3 at Southport although I've never known this happen. All of which are third rail. Not sure if one ever made it to Bury on third rail track or used electrified platforms at Victoria

I've seen ATW 143s at Cheltenham and Gloucester on Maesteg services.

The LEV1, although not strictly a Pacer, spent some time in East Anglia when it was on trial, on the East Suffolk lines I believe. I don’t think there was ever regular Pacer service after that.

Do we know when the 143's are expected to be withdrawn from Devon? There was a claim made on Saturday by a platform enthusiast at Kings Cross that their demise was imminent. To my mind that means in the next month or so...
