Hi,

I have a season ticket between two stations. The other morning I forgot my season ticket so had to buy a single which was £10.80. I was told I would be able to get it refunded. I have looked online and Northern charge a £10 admin fee for refunds. Does this mean I would get a grand total of 80p back?

For refunds of this type there are special rules - you will not be charged an admin fee on the first refund (in a 12 month period, IIRC), a second refund would have the fee imposed and a third would be declined completely.

Agreed. The wording of the relevant rule is:
National Rail Enquiries said:
Season Tickets left at home

If you do not have your Season Ticket with you when you travel you must buy a ticket for your journey. You will be able to get a refund on the fare paid on the first two occasions this happens in any 12 month period. On the second such occasion an administration charge will be made ... . No more than two of these types of refund will be made in any 12 month period. You will need to hand in the tickets you have bought. You should make refund claims of this type within 28 days of travel.

That's great, thank you both. Please can you offer any advice on the below questions?

I bought the ticket from the ticket office and I wasn't given a receipt. The only thing I was given was the ticket. Is the ticket itself enough? I'm sure I have proof of purchase on my bank statements.

Furthermore, do I have to return to the ticket office where I bought my ticket?

Yes.

No. You may take the ticket back to that ticket office if you wish, but not all ticket offices will be in a position to deal with your claim immediately, and I suspect many would sent it to a Northern Rail Customer Service Centre. Alternatively, you could e-mail Northern Rail, attaching a photo of the ticket, or write enclosing a copy of the ticket to Freepost NORTHERN RAILWAY. I would probably choose the Freepost option.

No. In this case the refund request must go, specifically, to the ticket office or company from whom the season ticket was purchased.
