I would like to nominate the Northern class 142? with thick high backed seats. I am just short of 6 feet tall and I have to sit with my legs at a 45 degree angle. If there isnt a law against such a seat pitch there should be.

Any clarification as to who makes the seats above or indeed that they are 142's (and not 144's?) would be appreciated.

Furthermore, any class with worse seat pitch would surprise me, but please enlighten me.

I would imagine between the Merseytravel interior 142s, 150/2s, or 153s. All unacceptably tight.

Most generous in Standard is probably between Class 80x and 175/180.

Class 144s are terrible for anyone slightly above average height (144012's seats are fine but the rest are horrible DVT inducing things ;) )

I'm guessing it was a 144 in fact. And, yes, certain of the seats on these - in particular, those on the right side facing forward in the front coach - are way too close together (closer, oddly, than those opposite). This, plus the excessively high seat backs that are presently fashionable in several places, make for an uncomfortable and claustrophobic experience.

Yes, I think you are correct it is 144's. It's a shame too as they were the best of the pacer fleet in my humble opinion.

Some of the 158 airline seats feel really tight.

Interestingly it's not just pitch that is the issue here. The steeply raked seats mean if your knees are higher up you have less space.

It may well be the actual seat to blame, but the 158s have, by a good margin, the tightest seating of all ScotRail's fleet in my opinion - the 170s feel so spacious by comparison!

However, I recall travelling on a 166 a few years back and that I think was the worst.

Personally I found the EMT 153's to have the worst pitch with the 2 bays back to back being and virtually every airline seat having very poor room for knees. Only one row of good airline seats per set and took me a few weeks to find it.
