Caught between Gravesend and Rochester without a ticket

the guy had trouble isssing me a penalty fare through his machine, he said he’ll send me a letter through post!! What does that mean??

In that case, it is probable that they will write to you and ask for your version of events.

I'd be surprised if the weren't, but to be sure, were there ticket purchasing facilities available at Gravesend at the time when you traveled? If only TVMs, did they accept your chosen payment type?

Have you previously come to the attention of South Eastern for ticketing related matters? Whilst this doesn't affect any offence committed, it could affect how South Eastern perceive the matter?

Basically I changed trains at Gravesend from Waterloo east.
What ticket(s) did you have from Waterloo East?
Did you show any ticket(s) when you were stopped?
What was/were the reason(s) for the Penalty Fare?

I had a all day travelcard from east Croydon and I was stopped because I had no ticket from Gravesend to rochester
