As Struner has done a foreign one, I will say Warwick - Palermo. broken by a replacement bus Rosario - Villa san Giovani so we missed out being shunted onto the train ferry.
[...]
sorry about that, didn't realize till later. tWas quite an experience too, mid sixties. Thru train from Duisburg to Athens. Not a sleeper & took two days & nights.
Somewhat more on topic would be Ft William-sleeper-London-Harwich-ferry-Hoek-Groningen. A ticket for the sleeper & another one for the ferry, London Liverpool St to any station in NL.
A pity you missed out on the train ferry, Ken!

Glasgow Central to London Euston, with a stop off at Preston, Crewe and Birmingham New Street. Overall took 9 hours. Left Glasgow Central at 04:28 and arriving into London Euston at approx 13:30 that afternoon.

Within the confines of the UK, I'd say Bude (via bus) to Exeter to London to Newcastle. That took me the best part of 14 hours due to delays on the ECML!

Longest at all that wasn't just for the fun of it was probably Nürnberg to Newcastle via Düsseldorf, Aachen, Brussels and London. Left at 0502 local time and arrived 0005, so 21hrs in total!

Norwich - Buttermere & return for holiday. Outward via Sheffield & Manchester with buses from Windermere, then back via Keswick, Penrith (buses) then WMCL to Nuneaton, and XC to Norwich

Ive done Weston-super-Mare to Inverness in a day, including Kings Cross to Inverness non-stop (8 hour journey)
Ive also done Weston-super-Mare to Edinburgh and back in a single day at least 3 or 4 times

Got on the Bananer at 06;04 at Swindon. Got off in Plymouth 12 hrs later.

Some people have more mileage than me. They got on before Swindon.

One train all day long? This is good isn't it? My mileage? about 832. I think full beans mileage was 876...

Glasgow-Oxford via Wolverhampton. Which compared to some journeys isn't that long I suppose.

Twickenham-Aberdeen and reverse when I was working and living in the Granite City (though more often I'd take the cheapo option of an overnight bus, in the 80s provided by a little Perth company called Stagecoach. Wonder what became of them.)

Probably not. OP states Within UK.

I think that you will struggle to beat the Bananer from Bristol-Padd- Padd- Carmarthen (via Hereford.) Carmarthen (via Swansea)-Padd- Padd-Plymouth

All one the same train? On the same day?

Also in the 80s the only time I did London-Penzance and then on to St Marys, Isles of Scilly by helicopter for a job interview. Didn't get the job but a nice expenses-paid jolly.

I suppose one could just about do Penzance to Thurso in one 24 hour period, entirely by rail. That would be long!

I think you can do it northbound in one day, not having to travel overnight I mean. Or at least I think it used to be possible.

In 24 hours, either:
Earl's Court - London Paddington - Kensal Green - London Euston - Inverness - Wick - Thurso
or:
Lake - Ryde - Portsmouth - London Waterloo - Hampstead - London Bridge - Tower Hill - Euston Square - Aberdeen

Without checking mileages, must be either St. Helens to Thurso (for meeting at Dounreay), or St. Helens to Falmouth (family holiday) .

Have done longer in Europe, but OT in this thread.

My longest for a proper reason was combining two family holidays when I was 15, me and my 13 y/o brother put on a train in Barmouth and collected at St Columb Road, changing at Birmingham.

Havant to Oban longest journey in a day, excluding excursion trains.

First trip was Havant - Southampton- Glasgow Central - Glasgow Queen Street- Oban and return several days later. Journey from Southampton to Glasgow was First Class with Virgin Trains thanks to an offer from Sunday Times.

Have also done Havant - Waterloo - Kings Cross - Edinburgh Waverley-Glasgow- Oban
and Havant - Three Bridges- City Thameslink- Kings Cross- Edinburgh - Glasgow -Oban

Think the worst journey was in the smoking carriage on The Chieftan HST from Edinburgh to Kings Cross. OK l was a smoker at the time but sat opposite a guy who smoked non stop and who had an oxygen tank and mask which he used between puffs! Plus the passengers who were in the non smoking coaches would come down and stand in the gangway having a good puff. The air conditioning could not cope with all the smoke, which you could cut with a knife, it was that thick.

I no longer smoke.

Have also done Havant to Chester return as a day trip on service trains

And Havant to Looe return day trip on service trains.

Inverness - Perth - Edinburgh - Peterborough - Ely - Kings Lynn

Travelling home after a trip to run the Inverness Half Marathon. The stop at Perth wasn't planned - there was a replacement bus from INV-PTH as the INV-EDI service I was meant to catch was cancelled.

Ipswich to Kyle of Lochalsh, via London. For a holiday. Or Lairg to Cheltenham (again via London) when returning from a long walk.

Both a long time ago, in BR days.

These days, Evesham to Lochailort or Kingussie tend to be the longest journeys I normally make.

Weymouth to Diss for a funeral, my Gran (who's brother the funeral was for) wouldn't have been able to go otherwise.

Obviously its best to do it on the 12:00 departure from Kings Cross. But if you do that, do it in summer. I made the mistake of doing it in March, and its was too dark to see anything once we left Edinburgh. and you really dont want to miss the views

Another work one: Darlington to Milford Haven, returning a couple of days later.

Did that twice!

For reasons I can't be bothered going into I day-tripped Truro, out on the Night Rivera and back on day trains.

Other than that I've day tripped Edinburgh, but my longest trip within the UK generally would be Wick, not one day though! :)
