Not counting 144008 seems daft, considering the class' imminent withdrawal. Surely, count it but asterisk it as no photo or something?

I think I alluded to being daft when I said I was originally from Yorkshire . :)

Seriously, it's just the way I record stuff. I don't have spotting books or write stuff down, I only record what I photograph or video in a spreadsheet (2 really ; 1 by place and date and one by train class ) - so if it doesn't get either of those two then it doesn't get recorded. I'm a bit lackadaisical in that respect ; keeps me from getting obsessive (not that there is anything wrong with being obsessive !).

An intense day in Leeds for sure, a nice reminder of how busy it gets just in time for me and my trip there in 3 weeks!

A busy day in Leeds :)

Yes Leeds is a bit busy ... probably a bit too frenetic for me. I prefer a bit more time to anticipate what is coming and appreciate what has been.

Agreed about Leeds being busy, I was there a couple weeks ago looking for units for mileage and walking between all the platforms isn't fun (especially when you get stuck pull in on top of a 158 on P17)

Meadowhall, probably the best platform for ticketless spotting will be around the tram platforms, although that doesn't get you anything heading towards Barnsley

Wow that sounded like a frenetic day. Plenty winners for the book of sights there, you got well n truly stuck in at Leeds.
I'd be counting 144008 if I saw it too. 144015 was my last Tyke Bouncing Bomb too. I looked all over Yorkshire for the stupid thing and when I wasnt looking for it, well more thinking the damn thing didn't exsist, there large as life, it was standing in one of the Bays at York.

Been a good read so far Mr 433. Look forward to the next installment.

The 3 x 144 set came in and sat on top of something (a 170, I think on Platform 1) and the end unit (144020) formed a service on its own ; so that would have been quite a walk, too

At Meadowhall, we were okay on the Doncaster-Sheffield platforms it was just the other two which resembled a drugs raid.

Thanks Mr 403 ; I'm done for that trip now. I need a lie down after that kind of action these days, particularly since there'll be an even mega - er trip in about a week which I'll probs write up.

I saw on trainlogger that 015 was sighted the following week so presumably nothing too serious was wrong with it. I'm just conflicted as to whether to go chasing or concentrate on 142s (haven't finished the Northerns or even started the Welsh or Great Western ones). Knowing my luck, if I went chasing it then it would probably go to Morecambe for the day. I have to face facts that I'm not going to finish me Pacers but I'll probably try to get a few more of me Northerns before they go.

Glad you caught up with 144008 eventually!

When I first started back in 2003 I was taking photos of literally everything and only marking it off if I had a photo or video clip of it. That changed after a few months thankfully! These days I don't even bother doing new sights, it's just about the haulages.

Leeds will be fun for me, but then I enjoy walking at a fast pace. Only needing one 185 will make things easier too, as I can pretty much ignore those. Similar with LNER, as I'll never get them all the 91s can be ignored and just focus on the Azumas (cleared their HSTs a few years ago). If I get a Pacer score (need 13 142s and not much less with the 144s) then great, but I will prefer to get my Yorkshire EMUs and any winning 150/153/156/158s in. Only need two Northern 158s, 5 150s and not too many 153s or 156s, so it should be easier to identify winners quickly.

I admire your (and many other people's) self-discipline in clearing stuff ; I just don't really have it ... well, I probably do but I just use it in the rest of my life and so when it comes to trains, I just go with what I want to do at that particular time. I really couldn't tell you how many DBC 66s I need or whatever. I just like going different places and photographing them, seeing a bit of the country that you wouldn't see otherwise, chatting to people on stations, going out in the countryside to watch them rattle through, spending time with my son ... or on my own ... different stuff.

Anyway, you'll certainly get your exercise at Leeds.

Oh I know I'll get my exercise in, and by the time comes for the trip (I arrive in Leeds in less than 3 weeks and 7 hours as I type this) I'm predicting to have made such good progress with my current health improvement scheme that I will be able to run around the station. Fast walking is all I can manage at the moment, and I do mean fast (when I need to I can hit 4.5mph), but I'm close to sounding the Air Horns of Victory on the penultimate stage of my improvement scheme so in 3 weeks' time I hope to have lungs strong enough to cope with a run. I already have the leg muscles to do it, just not the lung capacity yet.

I too use self-discipline away from the railway, which is how I'm a week ahead of myself on improving my health (and that's with a tight time limit to do it!) and is how I will get through the final tests I've laid down for it. I've been told I'm target-driven, which is a very accurate statement. Once I set a target I try to move heaven and Earth to achieve it. Sometimes it is quite handy to have such a mindset!

Main thing is that you're getting out and about in this big beautiful world of ours, which is something not that many people want to do. So kudos for doing so and also maximising time with your lad!

Ooh, SNCB 18s are rather good fun. It's been WAY too long since I last travelled on one. The 21s and 27s were more rateable mind, by god they were noisy!

Those old EMUs you sampled, also surprisingly good fun. I had one as my very first Belgian train on a leap from Midi to Nord in January 2013. It's just hit me how long ago that was!

A shame you didn't get to explore Liege, from what I remember of it in the late 1990s it is a gorgeous city.

Kudos for getting a 373 to Brussels, a very good choice. The refurb on 373s is, in my eyes, brilliant. You *should* have had 373212 on the back, if you're interested, but that's assuming they still use numerical pairs on 373s these days.

Good sir you have made me want a 373 bash again...

There is certainly much fun to be had on the rails in Belgium ... and, indeed, Belgium itself. There will be another Belgian installment on the return leg but I could probably spend a happy week there just roaming the rails.

Liege was a shame. A work colleague used to sing its praises. Still, I'm sure I'll go back one day. I also still need to fit in a trip to Ghent at some point ... never been there, it's supposed to be nice.

I have no memories of Gent, apart from passing through with some 18s when I did my Benelux InterRail. Crikey that was forever ago! So either I didn't do it in the 1990s (that was a school trip mostly focusing on battlefields of WW2) or I've got bad memory!

Thoroughly agreed on Belgium being good fun, if I had the money to do it I'd be off to Belgium on my days off next week. I'm starting to get itchy feet, I want to get going somewhere again...

That was an excellent read 433, I do like to read about the locos on main land Europe. I would get severely lost doing an InterRail though I'd love to do one.
I've watched many videos on YouTube and seeing stock top n tailed by the 18's always makes me wish I was there doing them. Even some when theres 2 rakes together, looks like a top n tailed set, with another rake attached to the tailing loco. Ain't seen that in the UK, since the late 80's, early 90s on the West Coast, normally at Carlisle.
I look forward to anymore shenanigans with trains on this trip.

Do I deduce Tech, you done the German bunnies back then. I've heard they were excellent, a guy I know, always spoke fondly of them. He used to always say, your young lads, get yourself out there, the Benelux region has some cracking locos to ride behind, you's lot would love it. The depots were apparently a doddle to get round at weekends too. We never did it, not even a thought went into it.. He spent more time doing those jaunts than in England.

Sorry 433, if I hijack your thread, my apologies.

Thanks Mr 403.

I'm not sure I'd like to do a full InterRail but I'd certainly like to do country passes, exploring as well as doing trains. I like poking around the edges of countries rather than the big sights.

I never really worked out in Belgium what dictates whether the 18s are working alone or top-n-tailing.

There will definitely be more shenanigans but it may take me a while to write up since I have to pore through what I saw to educate myself.

I can definitely foresee myself doing some quick European jaunts. With cheap flights, it can probably be cheaper than just doing UK train trips. I think people give Europe a miss because of lack of confidence with lingo but luckily (well, not luckily, I've worked bloody hard at it), I'm fairly fluent in French and German (and with a bit of prior effort can become competent in Italian and Russian) and so can usually find a language to converse in when in Europe. Haven't learnt Geordie yet though, so I struggle more in Newcastle. :frown:

Please, feel free to threadjack away - I'm not a possessive type (probs more interesting than what I post anywayz). :)

LSG, no I never did the German bunnies (433N, these are/were DB's Class 218s) and I will always regret not doing them. I have done some of CFL's 3000s in Luxembourg though, absolute beasts they are. Their 4000s aren't too bad either but the 3000s are better.

Also for 433N's benefit, I *have* to share this video from one of my trips to Brussels some years ago, featuring 2102 departing Midi:

An absolute BEAST of a loco that was! And the following is of a CFL 3000. There is a better one after this:

And I never tried these but this OBB loco was quite funky:

I did cop a (rubbish) photo of CFL 3005 in Liege as we left.

As for the DB 218s, I will have much to say about those later .... and the fat lady isn't singing yet if you really wanted to. Absolutely beauts.

Is it a 218 or is it just a mirage ?

Ooh I look forward to reading about your tale there then. Good to hear they're still going, but quite honestly with funds as tight as they are at present there's just no way I can get over there. When I come back from the USA in January, I will have more funds again but even then I'll have my next massive adventure to start properly sorting!

Did that loco actually play a bit of a tune or was it the PA System?
I look forward to hearing about the 218s too.
Yep its something that Taurus's do often when accelerating think its something to do with the motors or whatever.

Same here, another top read as expected :) My experience of Aachen was simply moving from one train to another, as part of my Four Countries trip. I never actually looked around in Aachen, although that was due to a broken rail causing hours of disruption and a long deviation around to get to Germany. I must look for my trip report for that trip actually, maybe even revive my nostalgic reports thread...

I said:
... blah blah blah ... DB 146 004-7.
(I must admit to not be entirely sure what the final digit represents ... I think it might be depot but if someone wants to enlighten me, that'd be good).

Since no one did my work for me and I want to educashunate y'all , I looked it out myself. It is the Prüfziffer or Check Digit and is ...

" ... calculated from the first eleven digits. For this purpose, the sum of digits of the number sequence is formed, which results when the numbers are alternately multiplied by 2 and 1 (first digit with 2, second with 1, third again with 2, etc.); the difference of this checksum to the next multiple of ten forms the check digit. "

Hope that is clear to everyone now. :D

Yeah totally:rolleyes:
That sounded like an excellent evening with a plethora of freight movements reminded me of the overnighters at Carlisle in the mid 80s. I will now have a butchers on youtube for freight at Bremen.

Very clear. I type this approaching Putney, using the wifi on what would presumably be 707-012-8! :)
