Hi all

First time poster, long time lurker on this great forum :) I'm not sure if this the right place for this, but just wondered if anyone has any ideas or suggestions to make the most of a Northern Day Ranger (Friends & Family £7 ticket)?

There'd be two of us setting of next Sat (15th) from Skipton (SKI) and hoping to return the same day- we'd like to make the most of the ticket which is valid for any Northern Train during that day as far as I'm aware.

Does anyone have any bright ideas about possible itineraries/recommendations for journeys we could make? It is the first time I've used one of these tickets so any ideas would really be welcome!

Thanks in advance!

Skipton-Carlisle-Barrow-Lancaster-Skipton would be a good route taking in 4 of the most scenic journeys in Northern land.

It does depend what you want to do though; ride on trains or see interesting places?

You beat me to it! I did exactly that journey with delay repay free tickets (once clockwise and once anticlockwise). Beautiful scenery for almost the entire trip.

Thanks both for your ideas- it is much appreciated! We'd like to mainly combine the two with a primary focus on riding on trains.

I think that round trip sounds good via Barrow.

If you spend some time at Carlisle or Lancaster then there should be something to observe. Plus you get to pass the WCRC depot at Carnforth.

The Glossop line is interesting after Guide Bridge. In fact, there is something in a few of the lines out of Manchester namely over the Ship Canal to Irlam and the long climb to Buxton.

I don't think you can do it clockwise, but Widdershins, and with the aid of a bus, you can do Skipton-Leeds-Harrogate-York (bus) Whitby-Hexham-Carlisle-Barrow-Carnforth-Skipton if you get up at sparrowfart.
