Of all the programmes, the Cl802 is on the most 'on-schedule' so effort is being made to ensure it stays that way. That said, I doubt we'll see them before the Mk5a coaches.

The Class 802/2 should be near enough on schedule due to what has been learnt and rectified in testing from previous versions of the IET from Hitachi. Depends now on when TPE get sets to train staff on.

There has been plenty of night return runs between the Heaton depot (Newcastle) and Manchester the past week, such as last night. Anything to report? Hearing the CAF sets become increasingly delayed, is there a chance the 802's could enter service before them?

Would be surprised if these don't have a smoother entry to service as all the ironing out of in service problems will have largely been found/done by GWR and LNER.

So when does the schedule see these in service?

I was talking to a TPE gent at Carlisle on 29th May this year when a 397 was in platform 3 on a test run. When I asked him when we could expect to see the new trains entering service, he replied that training the TPE crews is the main hold-up as it's difficult to arrange for them to be released from their driving duties.

In fairness quite a bit of unexpected spare capacity to get Class 397 training done as lots of Scotland crews not being utilised on Class 802 ECML work as diagrams haven't commenced yet.

Can guarantee the law of sod applies and 802"s and 397"s get released from testing around the same period!

5X82 & 5Q83 are both booked in as "MWFO" all this week - we could be seeing up to 3 runs of this from Eastleigh to Doncaster.

There's also Doncaster - Acton - Eastleigh on Tuesday & Thursday.
At a guess I would say all these moves are likely to be LNER units.

3 x 801 LNER and 2 x 802 TP (recent arrivals) at Eastleigh.
The 801's will need hauling, so whatever is doing the hauling of the incoming Doncaster moves.

There's also a 5Q66 21:19 from Heaton to Peterborough, most likely LNER units although TPE units have been running on ECML all the way to KGX in the past.

Update:- confirmed runner. Left Heaton 2 late.

Arrived in York. It's TPEs 802203

Not wanting to start another seat debate, but here's a couple of photos from one of the TPE 802 sets for those who are interested...

In my opinion, having ridden on GWR's IETs, these seats are not as bad as people have reported. I spent a good 45 minutes in the standard class seats and about 20 minutes in the first class and I was able to get comfy in both. I would say though that the First Class seats really are a cut above the GWR offering as they have the same padding as the Mk5a/Cl397, albeit with fabric vice leather.

One of the 802s was out on a test to York earlier. Should've been to Manchester but was turned back early.

The fabric looks very much like the DB Regio "light blue with dark blue squares" one. Interesting they've abandoned the white headrests.

It's still flat cloth, though, so it'll be filthy in a week. Poor choice.

That said spacing looks generous (nobody has I see yet decided to use the thin seats to "cram 'em in") and it does look a classy colour scheme and a bit less 1970s than the 185 interior which always reminds me of old East German compartment coaches with the pastel-ish colours and fake wood.

The fabric feels pretty good to be honest. I was really impressed with the quality, particularly on the first class. The entire interior looks very good and in my opinion, better than any other 80x interiors we’ve seen so far.
