Glasgow is one place where it's not taken off

I wonder how popular a P&R would be on the routes Stagecoach operate in to Glasgow on the express lines. I am thinking along the lines of the Fife/Edinburgh services. Mind you, that would involve SPT having some foresight ..

Nottingham have two. The one at Queens Drive will be operated by NCT as just a stop on their 49. The other one, at Colwick Racecourse, seems wrongly placed but both sites are busy every time I pass them. The tram ones are much more ideally placed and busy. As a summary, park and ride works here and we aren't as touristy as York.

Norwich’s Route 5 (Postwick Park and Ride) is no longer a dedicated park and ride service, it’s an all shacks service to the city centre.

Aberdeen has a few sites. The X40 used to run between Bridge of Don and Kingswells as a dedicated services with specific P&R fares but these have long been done away with as has the X40 service. All sites are free parking and pay on the bus.

Bridge of Don - served by First, service 1b on Monday to Saturday, no Sunday service. The site is also in easy walking distance of several other services.

Kingswells - served by Stagecoach, primary service is X17 but others do call. No longer served by First. Site is well used by locals, more as a bus terminus but still reasonably used as a P&R.

Craibstone - served by Stagecoach. New(ish) site which was served by First for a short time. Despite its presence on the busy A96, it sees little patronage, not uncommon to see just two to three cars parked in the hundreds of spaces.

Not strictly in Aberdeen itself but the Ellon park and ride, is arguably the most successful. Served by Stagecoach with a variety of services and destinations.

There is also the Charleston of Elsick site to the south. I’ve not been there so not clear on how well it’s used.

There are also two former sites at Westburn Road and Wellington Circle which were seasonal sites but these have both been closed for some time.

A less well known one in the Tees Valley is the Park & Ride that runs for the university in Middlesbrough, only in term time and operated under contract by Compass Royston, part of the Procters empire.

To comment on transportuser's list the Oxford buses all operate as limited stop regular services with full ENCTS acceptance. E
In addition to the city centre Thornhill has weekday services to Churchill and JR Hospitals and Water Eaton has services to Woodstock dropping tourists at the main gate of Blenheim Palace.

For me, living in the country with a very limted bus service, a P&R service lets me visit a major shopping centre without the need to negotiate city centre traffic or pay city centre parking prices. Where people can't realistically use PT for the whole journey it makes a lot of sense to provide P&R at a point where the traffic is sufficiently concentrated in just the same way that parking is provided at railway stations.

You don't necessarily need a dedicated park and ride service to do that. Just park on a road without parking restrictions near a frequent bus route.

Sounds like a good reason to sell off all that "brown field" land around railway stations currently doing nothing except store empty cars.

Do any other than Oxford, Cambridge and Bath run late enough into the evening to be useful for working meetings or evenings out? That's usually what stops me: services stopping at 6 or 7 and so useless for the cinema and in work trips risking a long walk back to the car if I go for drinks or dinner.

Leeds elland road last bus back is 20.45 and car park is locked at 21.15

In Windsor, White Bus’ weekday P1 is free between the town centre and King Edward / Home Park car parks. Car park charges apply.

On weekends and school holiday weekdays, Courtney’s 600 doubles up as both a Windsor to Legoland service for their visitors, and a P&R service as people can park at Legoland free then buy bus tickets into town. And since Reading Buses acquired Courtney, tickets can now also be used on the former’s Greenline routes.

Some Park and Rides are in tourist cities aimed at visitors and some aren’t

Regarding Leeds Elland Road, visit at the weekend and you’d think the site was a flop and about to be closed, as it is only fairly lightly used, even with fares being only £1 return after a certain time.

On a weekday though, it’s so well used for commuter parking, they are now planning on extending the site a second time with an additional 550 spaces.

Used to be four, and one of the best schemes in the country! Unfortunately Maidstone Borough Council has lost interest over the years.

I gather whether charging is done on bus or in the car park affects how much VAT can be claimed back!

There was also once a Saturday only park and ride site at Springfield.

But with a combined bus + parking ticket for two adults and up to three children. For a single adult £4.60 is still a pretty good deal compared with £7 for three to four hours parking in the centre.

I visited recently and parked on a side street in the suburbs and got a normal service bus in. Perhaps cheating?!

Edinburgh is another place where the dedicated P&R service has been replaced by "local" bus service - the 48/X48 used to run between Ingleston and Sherrifhall but the tram replaced it at Ingleston and there are no dedicated Park & Ride buses at Sherrifhall any more (AFAICR).

Doncaster is the same - two sites opened with huge fanfare in the good old days of the early millennium when councils/PTEs were well funded - there was a dedicated service between the two P&R sites - numbered 638 because it ran along the A638 - but over time replaced by diverting existing services on the A638 into the P&R sites (making local bus routes less attractive for existing passengers).

(on the subject of the X48 in Edinburgh, it was a good use of resources, providing a service to.from the city centre with the peak flow but also a contra-peak service to/from the RBS HQ at Gogarburn - so the buses were busy in both directions)

Although the X48 is no more, there were a few other crafty workings like that - involving either RBS Gogarburn or Riccarton campus. Makes sense to use the buses intensively. There were also other creative uses of peak services turning into other ones (Lothian is the only company I've heard of where a bus can simultaneously be on two routes, having started the next and still finishing off the first) - X12 into X31, 25 into X26, and probably more!

Padstow Park and Ride is no more than 10 mins walk from town down a steep hill.
It’s run by the land owner with buses contracted in.
Quite a lot of users choose to walk down and get the bus back up.
The signage says “car park £5 per car, free bus to town”. I believe this also means DDA rules aren’t applicable although DDA buses are now used.
Parking in town is £5.10 for 3-4 hours with increasing tariffs for longer.

Falmouth also has a private P&R where Olympians have been used consistently since 2016

Hazel Grove P&R is free parking and £4.80 into Manchester on a better than 10min service. Or £16 for a 7 day megarider.

But why park and ride when you can ride and ride?

I wonder how popular a P&R would be on the routes Stagecoach operate in to Glasgow on the express lines. I am thinking along the lines of the Fife/Edinburgh services. Mind you, that would involve SPT having some foresight ..

Silverburn and Hampden have Park and Rides i think .

Costessey P&R (Go Ahead Konectbus route 510/511):
• Adult Single: N/A
• Adult Return: N/A
• Adult Day: £2.70 after 12:00 / £3.70 before 12:00
• Adult Weekly: £14.00
• Adult Monthly: £55.00
• Adult Annual: £550.00
• Parking Charge: FREE
• Route Type: Dedicated Park & Ride Bus Route

Norwich’s Route 5 (Postwick Park and Ride) is no longer a dedicated park and ride service, it’s an all shacks service to the city centre.

Costessey (pronounced Cossey) is no longer a city park and ride site. Buses run along the A47 to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and UEA only.

As I understand it, the first few Norwich P&R sites were built in geographically sensible locations at junctions on the A47 west / south and east of the city, with the assumption that the buses would make a bee-line for the centre along the nearest radial road in/out of town. On paper, the shortest route from Costessey into town is along the Dereham Road, but this was slower than following the A47 south to the newer P&R site at the A11 Thickthorn junction and then following the Newmarket Road into town. Hence the decision to use Costessey as a dedicated UEA/N&N park and ride. This original road signs to Costessey P&R are now supplemented by boards that read “UEA and hospital only.”

At the time of Thickthorn’s opening, Norwich’s P&R was the largest in the country, with more than 5,000 car parking spaces at 6 sites.

Is the Cowes Park and Ride site on the Isle of Wight still going? It used regular service buses when we lived there.

I visited recently and parked on a side street in the suburbs and got a normal service bus in. Perhaps cheating?!
Don't shout about it or the council will just put in another CPZ.

All my favourite on-street parking spots to access various towns are now controlled. Unless I have done a check on Streetview first I no longer assume that any urban area will have on-street parking available.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Reading, which has two Park & Ride sites.

Winnersh Triangle is just off the A329(M) and adjacent to the Station of the same name. It is served by dedicated route 500 which operates every 15 minutes (Monday-Saturday except evenings) to and from Reading Town Centre. The fare includes parking, passengers use the barcode on their ticket to exit the car park. Passengers using ENCTS passes can buy a £1 parking-only ticket from the driver. Single and return tickets can also be bought for journeys originating in Central Reading (there are a number of businesses and a hotel at Winnersh Triangle), these are cheaper as parking is not included. Last bus from Central Reading is around 18.30, but passengers can use return tickets on routes 4/X4 which stop close to the Park & Ride and operate until 23.00.

Mereoak Park & Ride is situated just off the A33, and just south of Junction 11 on the M4. It is served by the Greenwave services and fares for journeys commencing at the Park & Ride site also include parking - again there is a £1 parking-only ticket for ENCTS pass holders. Buses to and from Central Reading operate from early morning until around 22.00. There are also direct buses on Mondays to Fridays to Royal Berkshire Hospital, and a peak-hours service to and from the Green Park business park. Mereoak is also used by National Express as its coach stop for Reading, avoiding a time-consuming detour via the town's congested roads.

Years ago in Reading National Express used to use Sainsburys stop by Junction 12 .Then they moved to the park and ride to avoid going into Reading. Cant remember when they stopped going into Reading Town Centre

The latest timetable booklet shows the park and ride on the 1 between Cowed and Newport every 15 mins and even finishes after midnight.

NCT are now operating the Colwick Racecourse one soon. The newly upgraded 49 started on Monday and theres been quite a lot of publicity around it.

It was a few weeks ago. Think it's weekends only.
It runs 7 days a week using the Esplanade site in the main. Summer weekends it operates from Fairway the opposite end of Marine Lake and the Promenade.

It has been operated for the last year by Cumfybus using 61 and 12 plate Hybrid Optare Versas acquired from Rotala. 2 or 3 are in a Sefton Council adaptation of the erstwhile Southport Corporation livery.

Do any other than Oxford, Cambridge and Bath run late enough into the evening to be useful for working meetings or evenings out? That's usually what stops me: services stopping at 6 or 7 and so useless for the cinema and in work trips risking a long walk back to the car if I go for drinks or dinner.

3 of the York sites run until at least 2230.
