Off to London tomorrow for the day and purchased a super off-peak return the other night.

I could do with picking something up from a shop near Manchester on the way down.

Would I be allowed to go via Manchester and travel into Euston on Virgin or would it not be a reasonable route?

Thanks in advance.

Not a permitted route.

And I'd suggest that under the old BR rules it would not have been regarded as a "reasonable route" either!

It's not a permitted route.

There are alternative tickets we could have recommended but it's a bit late now!

Where did you buy the ticket?

Whether or not it 'seems' a reasonable route is almost always going to be the primary factor that determines whether or not members of staff allow a particular route, but it unfortunately no longer has a bearing on whether it actually is a permitted route (for which you could obtain compensation if you were refused travel).

As it so happens in your case, going via Manchester on a Leeds to London ticket isn't actually a permitted route, and I can't say for certain whether TransPennine Express staff would be happy with it across to Manchester. What I can almost certainly say though is that it wouldn't be accepted on Virgin, so there's not much point in trying!

It may be possible to obtain an "underdistance excess" from a limited number of amenable ticket offices, which would help you buy the ticket in such a way as that you can use it via Manchester, but most ticket offices are going to tell you that this is "not possible at all" (rather than a more helpful reply of "you don't have a strict entitlement to the excess and my system won't let me sell it to you, but how about X station ticket office?").

Which rather risks sending someone on a wild goose chase to try and obtain something they are not really entitled to have. I'm unconvinced that would be good customer service!

It is certainly better than suggesting it's not possible at all. The end result for most people would be the same - they give up - but at least the latter, correct, version indicates that those who are determined can still give it a try.

Cheers all, I suspected as much but isn't a big issue. Purchased on LNER website.

You can go via York on GC and Sheffield on EMT so thought it was a possibility (albeit slim).

I think if you bought an LNER Super Off Peak Return from Huddersfield to London, this is Any Permitted so I believe it is valid either via ECML or WCML.
It also allows break of journey so a single from Leeds to Huddersfield would position you to start the London trip there, and break your journey on the Manchester route.
You can then finish short at Leeds on the return leg from King's Cross.
You'd have to obey the appropriate time restrictions for each route.
The VT Huddersfield-Euston Off Peak Return fare (via Manchester) is 20p cheaper than the LNER Super Off Peak Return (Any Permitted).
