Hello, I'm a new poster and have been reading your forum for a while, so I'd thought I'd just ask what on earth happened on the ECML today. A family member visiting from York endured a nightmare journey this afternoon with a reported signal failure and a busted train in the Retford area causing big delays.

Any idea of the exact causes?

Along with yet another Class 180 deciding everyone on board was too cold and decide to set itself on fire.

- Signal failure between York and Doncaster
- GC HT Class 180 fire
- Points failure at Doncaster
- Signal failure between Leeds and Doncaster

Pretty busy day for the ECML.

No GC issues today apart from delays due to a failed Hull Trains unit (presumably a 180, could be their HST)

Normally between Newark and Retford. Can something be done about the equipment on that stretch to make it stronger and more secure than it seems to be?

On a train...somewhere!
- Signal failure between York and Doncaster
- GC Class 180 fire (again)
- Points failure at Doncaster
- Signal failure between Leeds and Doncaster

Pretty busy day for the ECML.

Most things seemed to have recovered from the earlier loss of signalling at Adwick before it all went downhill...

There were some minor delays due to a brief points issue at Colton Jn.
More serious issues with cable theft at Shaftholme Jn and Emergency Special Working now in force until close of service.
1H05 failed (not confirmed as a fire) involving FHT 180109 at Bawtry.

Just been through Doncaster, and there are several delays and cancellations: these things happen. Anyway, welcome to the forum TrainGeekUK!

The Hull Trains issue wasn't a fire, but some sort of fluid leak and resulting steam or smoke (yet to be diagnosed fully, so far as I know) followed by a delay whilst some quite valid concerns about the recovery of the unit were addressed (namely that coupling to a rescuing unit would do more harm than good, possibly transferring the fault).

@TrainGeekUK your family member can claim Delay Repay for their journey through from York to their final destination (including any missed connections).
Reported fire on a train, nothing to do with infrastructure
That was just one of the many issues (see list above), though Hull Trains were denying that it was a fire.

The points failing from platform 3 to 4 and onto Scarborough bridge at York station causing a 185 to get stuck on platform 3 for the best part of an hour didn't help much either.
