Bolton Line 95/100mph Speed Increase

As expected, it seems that the 95mph down/100mph up speed increases are live as of this week (17/06/19)
Hit 91mph on an up train this morning.
For context, there previously had been blanket 75mph.
See attached graphic, think the unit was 319372. From Bolton to Salford Crescent. Think the GPS dropped out through Farnworth Tunnel.

Are there any plans to tighten sectional timings as a result?

100mph running went live on 19 May 2019 and apart from TPE catching up with late running Northern stopping services it is working really well.

There should be as the speed enhancements are a requirement for TPE to reinstate Bolton calls so they keep their Castlefield/WCML paths at either end.

Really? I know there were some contradicting reports in the electrification thread and previous journeys I made seemed to max out at 75mph. Do Northern drivers not always reach the higher speed as it is not presently required for timekeeping?
Have any Northern drivers hit the magic 3 figure number on a 319?

So they might not extend the overall time but use the increase in permissible speed to cover for a Bolton call.

Yes. The ESR came off before the service started that morning (19 May). I have no idea if Northern Drivers are holding back or what speeds they have achieved on the line I'm afraid.

All of Northern's are still on diesel SRTs so there's no point hooning off, just to wait time. Even with a slack on at Clifton and 2 late off Bolton we still arrive at Crescent 1 early ... my GPS has never clocked one doing more than 82.

The higher speeds were definitely live on late May Bank Holiday Monday - 'felt' like about 90 on the Up through Farnworth (faster than usual), followed by definite braking for a 75 Temporary Speed Restriction just south of Kearslwy.

I tracked my 319 going direct from Bolton to Salford Crescent without stopping and it didn't seem to hit more than around 80mph, even then we were a bit early so there was probably no reason to go fast.

Definitely slowed down to around 30 near the end probably to wait for a slot into Salford Crescent.

Probably people not ragging it to get up to 100mph.. will be easily achievable between Bolton and Salford Crescent.

Since being resignalled you could get to Salford Crescent 4 minutes early in a 142 at a max of 75mph. Most people pretty much used to shut off at Kearsley due to the falling gradient and the train would easily be doing 75mph on the way down.

I would suspect people are probably just rolling the majority of the way down the hill from Bolton so as not to get to Crescent stupidly early.

When I drove them (when they were down south) You needed a long run up, the wind behind you, a down hill gradient, on a sunny day in June, with your mates pushing, and a quick prayer to Jebus before it even pushed 90

I thought they, like 321s, did 0-100 in 3 mins?

I believe they are only powered from one coach, which also has to accommodate passengers which may effect how much electronics can turn electricity into speed.

They do have only one motor coach, but if it's dry enough that coach should be able to put down its 1,438hp easily enough. And certainly the less powerful (though also a bit lighter) 317s are, according to Angel Trains, capable of attaining 100mph in 3 mins.

Officially ? Not a clue.

We used to run fast from St Albans and you almost got to Elstree before you hit 100 and you really had to keep it open (It's also downhill). Even then it was touch and go. Getting them to 100 was difficult.

The second it rained...

I loved driving them but they weren't known for their speed. They were good in the middle bit but just dropped off past 70 and then struggled. From what I've learned from this forum. It's down to how they are geared towards metro, so they are really nice at acceleration but bugger all else.

You can get a speed reading on NAVMII which is one of the apps that doesn’t use your data allowance as you download the maps beforehand and it’s free.

Well I referring purely to the linespeed increases, though surely the point in them is to reduce journey times even if it's not at the present.

of course the point is to reduce journey times but if they have increased them on some journeys which mean you now miss the connection at preston for squires gate then its not a good difference this has made

I appreciate they've increased some just now, but will they not reduce the ones they've increased to less than what the were before they increased them though?

319s are not capable of 100mph between Salford Crescent and Bolton. You'd be lucky to get above 90.

In the other direction 95 is attainable, however there is a longstanding short 75mph TSR after Kearsley so 95 is only really likely down near Clifton at the moment.

Do you drive them ? How do you find them (if you do) I hope they improved them from their time down South. Are they still !$£$ in the wet ?

That is just being unlucky and ending up at Euxton at the same time as the Liverpool Blackpool goes by, then the Lancaster Euston in the other direction. Both the Northerns stopping at Leyland too which requires 2N60 to be on the fasts.
