Not really that odd if you think about it - 707s aren't very well suited to the sort of duties that the 442s will be doing, and were on an comparatively high lease price, so ditching the 707s made sense, as did obtaining the 442s.

Way back when the northern franchise was being let and awarded, 319s were the only option! We've only seen swathes of EMUs come off lease since all of the contracts were signed and the finances agreed.

Electrification dropped because it is (unfortunately) far more expensive than anticipated, so we are back to the old DMU shortage situation we had before the swathes of electrification were planned and every little helps. That said, GW hasn't been competitively bid for for a while, and I would expect to see the sprinters moved on when they do next award a proper franchise.

multiple electrification schemes have been pushed to the side so the north and the west country are having to use pacers and sprinters (albeit with much more comfortable seats than the south east ironing boards).
You've never been on a Pacer with original bus bench seats then.

Another crying shame is the scrapping of some of the 373s

Nonsense. Carphone Warehouse are issuing profit warnings and closing almost 100 stores because people are now tending to hold onto handsets for longer.
Would wager that's as much to do with the rise of Internet shopping and the ever higher price of flagship handsets.

For TOCs the cost per mile of new stock is usually much less than current stock and since they don't have to finance them it's almost a no brainer

So it seems that the 376s will become yet another mid-life electric fleet to have no future.

i think the 376s should be refurbished to the same standard as the 375 refurb, fitting of toilets and possibly end unit gangways and a sixth car and the software upgrade needed (whether by cannonballizing some 376s or getting Bombardia to build some more 376 spec coaches)

i even made a diagram of the proposed 376/6

Disband the (awful) 376's) and use the non-driving carriages to augment the 378's to 8-car for the NLL (platform lengths permitting...)
Genius... or it would be if the 378s weren't maximum 5 cars (something to do with the onboard TMS), something which has been repeated on this forum regularly. Why not use them to extend other Electrostars to 5 cars?
Edited to add: see post below

unfortunately, MITRAC (the train management software for 375/376/377/378/379/387) does not cater for more than 5 cars in a unit, to add a 6th would require an extra VCU (Vehicle Control Unit) and effectively configuring the train as two separate permanently coupled multiple units.

And aventras too.
Effectively 5 cars per EVC limit for ETCS.
345s are effectively 5+4 car.
The 10 car ones are 5+5.

Moving to 24m cars enables 240m trains to be 10 car rather than 12 reducing costs.

It does seem odd at the moment that the flagship 395 service has no first class whereas the regular 375s do have first class considering that both serve many of the same classic routes.

I can imagine SE Holding onto the Outer-Fleet and I wouldn't be surprised for the Metro Fleet to be simplified to something like the Aventra Platform (given most stock on SE is Electrostar)
