In the MEN today:
https://www.manchestereveningnews.c...news/how-part-manchester-city-centre-16451373

I'm particularl I note the following paragraph:

"At the same time Network Rail wants to see its land next to Deansgate railway station - bounded by Whitworth Street and Bugle Street - redeveloped too, with the council suggesting a hotel or block of flats with shops alongside."

Sounds like NR have no intention of preserving an 'option' to further increase capacity along the corridor in the future. Or am I misreading the article? What is the extent of the NR land near Deansgate?

To me that sounds like they want to densify on the north side of the tracks (where Rebellion is now), which wouldn't affect the south side.

The viaduct could be doubled decked and slope near Oxford Road. Its unlikely that it could be widened. There is planning permission for a skyscraper on an empty plot and 3 old buildings which could be demolished but permission would be difficult to gain. The land is extremely valuable too because its now between a skyscraper area and the historic city centre. Piccadilly 13 and 14, the station throat, Oxford Road are bigger bottlenecks than Castlefield Junction and Deansgate.
