In geological stratigraphy Alport lends its name to the Alportian Stage of the Carboniferous Period on account of characteristics of the rocks found in the vicinity.
Another Stage within the Carboniferous is the Marsdenian, named after the Yorkshire settlement of Marsden.

The author and engineer O S Nock lived and died in Batheaston in 1994. He was, however, born in Sutton Coldfield in 1905.

The television transmitter at Sutton Coldfield is second only to the one at Crystal Palace in the London Borough of Bromley in terms of UK population covered.

Tom Robinson, the writer and pop artist, went to school in Saffron Walden. His ‘brother’ in the song ‘Martin’ hitchhiked ‘from Clapham to Crewe’ to see him in prison.

Bentham in North Yorkshire, like Crewe, has a crater on Mars named after it.

(In reality probably named after Jeremy Bentham the philosopher)

Nelson in Lancashire shares its name with the lesser known settlement of Nelson in Gwent

In the centre of the roundabout at Elephant & Castle stands a memorial to Michael Faraday, famous for his discoveries in electricity and magnetism. . He was born nearby. His statue stands outside the Institution of Engineering and Technology in Savoy Place and he is buried in Highgate Cemetery.

(The memorial at the Elephant houses an electrical substation for the Northern Line, which seems appropriate)

Admiral James Vashon (1742 – 1827), although born in the nearby Herefordshire village of Eye, lived in Ludlow following his distinguished service in the Royal Navy. He died in the town and is buried at St Laurence's.

Pennington is reputedly the burial place of the great Welsh patriotic leader Owain Glyndwr, who, during his rising to overthrow English tyranny, held a parliament at Machynlleth.
