The version I'd heard (from a friendly Northern manager) was that all the Connect-branded services would be 195/331 with a few 158s brought up to the same standard operating the Carlisle - Newcastle route.
Interesting. I guess the question that remains then is whether Ellesmere Port to Leeds will be Connect branded since it’s not mentioned on the website (unless it’s implied to be covered as a diverted service in the Chester to Leeds timetable).

Could be wrong but a 331 was on its way to Edge Hill. 104. Was it that what you’ve all seen?

FWIW the 158s have received a 195 style interior, but it's certainly not up to the standard of new - it's a very poor quality job with paint all over the place and the reservations conduit a cheap bit of bent metal again badly painted. Excellent legroom though with the very thin ironing board seats and near-full window alignment as the original layout is retained except for a few rows for priority seating, unlike on the 195s where it appears all the bays are *only just* misaligned.

195112 was sat idling on the through road at Crewe this evening, then took off towards Winsford.

First sighting of one - they look smart and sound pretty decent; maybe a cross between a Turbostar and one of the Irish Rail class 22000 trains. I'm hoping a few will work along the Bolton corridor, either to supplement 331s on the Blackpool service, or covering one of the Clitheroe diagrams.

Just curious but what are the arrangements for holding them when not out on runs at the moment? I only ask because, according to my notes, I've seen at least eight different units sitting in Newton Heath over the past few weeks, but never more than two at any one time. Is that deliberate or just coincidence?

I've heard on good authority that 1U91 0548 Barrow-Manchester Airport on 01/07 will be a 195.
Hope so. I can have a good gander as that service is normally on the opposite platform when I get the morning train into Manchester. It's not going to be a panacea for Northern's problem but it'll give them a bit of much needed respite.

No idea but there seem to be a lot of runs out from Blackpool North currently so something must be ready for a passenger service soon

Are the new facilities at Newton Heath (wasn't it the ex Old oak common wheel lathe) finished yet?
K

Not yet. Newton Heath have a new depot/stabling building being built for the 195 fleet and the ex Old Oak wheel lathe being fitted to the old paint shop.
Not too sure when the work is supposed to be completed.
Update: just checked, wheel lathe is supposed to be finished this autumn, new stabling/maintenance for 195's supposed to be finished Spring 2020.

The new services are also coming up on National Rail's journey planner, which implies that they are likely to go ahead.

They're really pushing for 01/7 but it'll be a shambles due to lack of training if they get them out

I believe a unit shortage was the problem, so they'll be extending the current Preston to Airport (via Wigan) services, as these are only in the WTT until the end of June.

One example of this is this service:

Many thanks! I normally refer to the downloaded National Rail Timetable so I did not realise that some of the services were broken as NRT shows one through service already!

123 is also tucked away in Edge Hill (And 331 009) so they’re arriving thick and fast now. Also quite a few out and about on the main lines in the NW running around so there has to be some progress

Over the last month or so a unit has been leaving Edge Hill for elsewhere (Allerton, Barrow, Blackpool, Newton Heath etc.), and is swiftly replaced by another. It seems like nothing is moving when the reality is the conveyor belt seems to be in full swing now, as the below shows.

I've also noticed a real step change in the turnaround times for a new set arriving before being sent out across the network. Fingers crossed it's a good sign, I fear staff training, or lack thereof, will be what holds things back at this stage.

The morning E Port service currently comes from Allerton/Lime St via Warrington, and does a Helsby shuttle before setting off for Leeds.
Sounds like a Sprinter diagram to me.
Could all change of course.

Thats what I feared. It doesn’t seem to be the same unit that forms the 15:38 service back to Ellesmere Port either unless I’m mistaken. I doubt they’ll swap it from a Sprinter in that case but if they make it a 158 at least that would be something.

Not wanting to wander off topic, but for info....
Do you know where it goes after Leeds?
The diagram is 0510 LIV-ELP, 0617 ELP-HSB, 0634 HSB-ELP, 0715 ELP-LDS, 1018 LDS-MCV, 1158 MCV-LDS, 1338 LDS-CTR, 1614 CTR-LDS, 1919 LDS-MCV, 2058 MCV-LDS, 2250 LDS-KNO.

It's a different unit, the afternoon run is booked as a 150 - 158s can't work this diagram as only Liverpool sign Helsby to Ellesmere Port, however they don't sign 158s.
This problem occurred as recently as last Friday when 158795 ended up on the diagram, and 1D72 was cancelled from Victoria because of the incorrect traction.

They made it a 158 on Friday and it got cancelled at Victoria as Liverpool crews don't sign them.

Thanks scrapy (and AMD). Looks like it might be back to the car in another month then. Hope the 195s are a success on other routes though.
