I asked the fleet service manager (who was the guard) , he said deadline for the Desiro referb is now January!

You said 450013 was done then but it's being done again?

Got a bit ahead here with the prediction of 450013 going to Eastleigh. The unit went to Eastleigh 13-5 but returned to service with no work done due to delays with 450010 on site there.

Sounds about right given the slow pace! I wonder if that means that the repaints won't now commence until next year either.

To the casual observer, eg me, it finally feels as though it's a now rare thing to stumble across red seat covers in a 450.
On the Portsmouth line, I feel like we still see a significant number more Red seats than Blue - same on the 444s. Wondering if unrefurbished units are being focused on Fratton?

I would presume the Desiro repaints will occur only when the internal work is complete, so unfortunately they will probably start next year, which is a shame because the Desiro paintwork is really dirty now; particularly the 444s.

Is there a reason why the interiors are being done first as I would have thought it would be quicker and easier to do exterior work so it would be done first, this does seam to be the case with most other operators such as the WMR 172's.

They probably need as many of the trains as possible to run the timetable in the absence of the expected number of 442s

Contractual arrangements. The WMR 172s are maintained by WMR in-house at Tyseley, while the SWR Desiros are maintained by Siemens at Northam. Northam doesn't have revinyling facilities, while Tyseley does.

Where will the SWR units be done then?

Northam isn’t big enough to do the interior modifications either, which is why that work is done at Eastleigh. I think the Desiros will ultimately have at least a properly repainted base colour, and I expect that will probably happen at Bournemouth depot, where there’s a modern paint facility.

Weren't the 442s repainted into base grey at Bournemouth?

SWR have stated that they will be painted, not vinyled, ie same as the 158/9s.

So the majority of the 159/0s are now in SWR colours. I reckon they’ll start repainting the 159/1s from next year including the desiros.

Does anyone know if the large litter bins will be fitted by the doors on the ex-HC refurbished units? The small bins between the seats are not clearly visible on 450543 so the train appears messier as passengers leave their rubbish on the floors and seats.
