As for the future, there are plenty of routes across the country that are worked by DMUs that have no need for any more then 2 or 3 cars. Yes it would have been nice to have had gangways on them, and I'm glad to see that the new CAF units will have them, but so far it seems that not ordering them on 175s has rarely proved an issue.

Probably because they rarely operate in multiple. I think it's only a couple of workings.

ETCS has been fitted in the Heathrow tunnels to replace the existing obsolete Automatic Train Protection system. It is not yet active as the systems interfere when both are active at the same time. Published plans state that when the Class 387s take over the running of the Heathrow Express service from the Class 331s the old system will be deactivated and removed.
Correction the Heathrow Express uses Class 332's not 331's they're the new Northern EMU's!

All sorts of rumours floating round here lately. Apparently we’re off to Coventry or rugby next! I’ve given up listening.

That one's got a bit more than rumour to it: there was an open-access application to Coventry on the ORR website, as discussed here. The links have gone dead since they were first posted two weeks ago, though, so there's still plenty of confusion and uncertainty to go around.

Coventry was part of the application, Rugby was just a rumour coming out of one particular messroom. Hopefully the idea hasn't been abandoned already (I was looking forward to a few extra miles on my route card) but the disappearance doesn't seem like a good sign.

My son, travelling back from Conway to Chester saturday night noted both toilets locked out of service on the 175 !
The guard said they had been vandalised.
Good job it wasnt a very long journey!

I'm surprised they allowed it to enter service in such a state.

It wouldn't enter service with no working toilets. There is a big difference between entering service and remaining in service. It could well have been the last train out of Holyhead and there was either the choice of running the service without working toilets to get it to Chester for repair, or cancel the service.

I sure know which I would prefer.

Also, you'd be surprised at what people do to toilets on the trains. I've seen loos deliberately blocked with the entire contents of the the bog roll holder. Seats pulled off, mirrors broken, vomit everywhere. Could have been anything.

Apologies, I only realised it was "Saturday night", I thought it was a service this morning. I've yet to actually see any significant damage myself beyond the usual wall scrawlings, but the damage you describe doesn't surprise me sadly.

I'll always remember coming across a 150 one day and you'd honestly think that someone had been murdered and chopped up in the bog.

There was what looked like a mixture of vomit and blood all over the toilet, walls and floor. It was absolutely horrendous.

That sounds pretty horrific. Would they still put it into service like that, albeit toilet locked-out?
