Hi I've got a bit of a convoluted journey to Glasgow using non protected Priv which I would appreciate some help on.

Journey 1 Sat 29th June London to Scarborough at around 1pm to attend Yorks v Surrey the next day

Journey 2 Monday 1st of July departing after tea so around 4.30ish Scarborough to Glasgow.

Journey 3 Friday 5th July I would like to have a choice, if the weather is poor in Glasgow or Edinburgh I'll just come back to London, but if decent I'll stay in Edinburgh until Sun 7th and then travel back to London on the afternoon of Sun 7th (any engineering work issues?)

Any help much appreciated.

Check a journey planning website for train times but for ticketing I'd suggest , either:

London to York super off peak return
York to Scarborough off peak return
York to Glasgow off peak return

Or

London to Scarborough super off peak return
York to Glasgow off peak return

You can obtain the exact prices on www.brfares.com

Technically you would have to travel back via York, but in practice if you showed both tickets , along with your PRIV, to a Virgin Trains TM prior to departure at Glasgow and ask if you have permission to board a direct train, they may say yes.

Thanks, I did wonder if there was a station in the Central belt you could pick which allowed you to use either EC or WCML?

You could of course simply use a London to Edinburgh Super Off-Peak Return. A hair more expensive than the Any Permitted Off-Peak Return London to Glasgow, but the latter bars break of journey (in theory - staff are very unlikely to know about the restriction!). You could then just add on York to Scarborough Off-Peak Return.

Yes, Glasgow is fine to do that, but you'd need an Anytime Return or another single, to cover 1st July.

Thanks for the advice. Just one more question if I'm on an off peak open return will there be an issue with me doing York-Edinburgh-Glasgow on the Monday if I'm getting a train from York about 5.30?

Is that 5:30am or pm? I'm presuming pm as the first train to Glasgow isn't until 06:25am! If you held the Super Off-Peak Return from London to Edinburgh then effectively you couldn't take the ex-London trains to Edinburgh that depart during the London evening peak. From York, that'd be the 16:54 to 20:39 inclusive. You could, however, still take any CrossCountry or other non-London service, and I'm sure if you asked the Train Manager before boarding that most LNER guards wouldn't mind you travelling on an "invalid" service as long as it isn't too busy.

The only way to completely "get around" this restriction is to not buy a ticket to or from London (as non-London regulated tickets aren't permitted to have evening peak restrictions), but that then causes problems if you want to travel back via the West Coast. It's a bit of a catch 22!

For York to Glasgow:

Off Peak Return (SVR) formerly known as Saver Return: http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=YRK&dest=GLC&grpd=0433&rlc=PRV&tkt=SVR is £26.05
Not valid on trains departing after 02:59 and before 09:30.
Anytime Return (SOR) formerly known as Anytime Return: http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=YRK&dest=GLC&grpd=0433&rlc=PRV&tkt=SOR is £32.50

So 0530 isn't valid on an Off Peak Return, but 1730 is.

If you buy London to Glasgow, you'll need the Anytime Return (formerly known as "Open Return") to include validity on Monday: http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=1072&dest=0433&rlc=PRV&rte=95&tkt=SOR and if you come back via Preston you may be required to pay the excess (£6.25) to the "Any Permitted"

All the fares are on www.brfares.com

If you want maximum flexibility to go back via Preston, get London to Glasgow Anytime Return (route: "via York", where you will be breaking your journey), York to Scarborough Off Peak Return, and pay the excess on the return portion from Glasgow, to route: "Any Permitted", if required. That works out at about £75 in total.
