If you don't mind lots of nights and not being able to really plan your life more than 1 week at a time go for it.
Freight is very volatile, the job is not secure like a TOC.

Thanks for the reply, man. I don't mind nights, and I've not got much of a life to plan around; the other bit is what I am concerned with though. I've been told freight can be up and down as far as work goes, but heard its currently on an 'up', and that Freightliner has some decent work. As I said though, just considering options, looking at other TOCs too.

Depends on the side - Intermodal is fairly secure, and due to the scheduled nature of Intermodal traffic, the IM drivers have a fairly fixed roster (just with lots of nights) although not many weekends at some depots.

IM is definitely more structured, or so I was led to believe at my DMI last year. However the salary reflects this, which isn’t great in comparison to other FOCs (£47k?) although naturally there will be the usual overtime etc no doubt. HH is very much a case of getting the roster week by week, but attracts a higher salary (£51k?). You naturally have to be flexible whatever you do, but IM is certainly more family friendly.

Question for Stigy; what's it like on the engineering work? I'm just finishing my PQ and looking at everything.
Sorry, I haven’t got a clue as I don’t work for them. Just passing on very limited knowledge of them.

This is more the Heavy Haul side, but even they are pretty secure with their jobs at Freightliner with all the long term contracts they have presently. HH salary around £54k now.

Intermodal, as secure as you can get. As Regan says, rarely work weekends, structured 13 week rota, mixture of days, evenings and night work (all pretty much like passenger work), and now the salary is up to £49,500, but most earn a lot more than this without doing rest days due to harmonisation (totally different subject), the increasing number of passenger drivers coming to FL Intermodal, say they usually take home more since moving from passenger driving.. You are very well looked after on the IM side.

I don't know the t&c's with heavy haul the tamper side was 32 weekends with an extra 4 added on Easter bank holidays and Christmas and new year bank holidays guaranteed to work as I've said working for the intermodal side has been a great move for me.
Doesn't matter mate, it's still nights nights and more nights ;)

Moved off your booked job claim 2 hours for a less shift and 3 hours for longer shift plus one hour for phone call.

As far as I know the Garston roster is full.....)I’m currently in a trainee talent pool waiting on a northwest course.)

This is right. I know a qualified freight driver on the transfer list for Garston and cannot get in.

Looking at the signing on sheet they cover some intermodal work to/from crewe, birmingham and wembley.

Cement train to/from west thurrock and I’d guess dagenham.
Then there will be engineering trains which will be in their region will cover midland mainline?!
