Street word in Newcastle is that gary monk is lined up.

My dad thinks the same. Don't think it will happen though, he's just been royally screwed by one set of owners who pushed a player out of the door without consulting him. All very Ashley-esque. Grant on the other hand is used to being a puppet.

You've got to give this lad credit. He's still got it! From yesterday....

I love the goalkeeper's expression on his face after picking the ball out of his net!

Well done Ladies. I've been thoroughly enjoying this tournament. Better effort than the lads. I look forward to the Semi-final. Good luck lasses!

How have they made a better effort - ‘the lads’ got to the semi-finals last year as well?

Quite some time ago, there were postings made upon this thread to the effect that breaching the Football Financial Fair Play rules by the bigger European clubs would only result in a fine and would not see such clubs actually banned from competing in major European tournaments, where the total income loss would be far greater than a fine.

AC Milan had been charged with such a breach of rules for overspending and they took their case to the arbitration body. AC Milan have just found out that they have lost their appeal and even though they finished in a position in their domestic league that would have allowed them to compete in the 2019/2020 UEFA Europa League, they have been banned from entering this tournament next season.

Certain armchair football pundits say the Europa League does not provide much in the way of income, but statements from coaches and managers whose teams have a successful run in this competition say different. It was two English clubs who went all the way to the final in the 2018/2019 tournament and I am sure enough finance was gained by both these teams.

Though not quite the full story. AC Milan appear to have made a plea bargain with EUFA and CAS to take a season out of European football in settlement of many seasons breach of the rules.

From the BBC Sport Website:
This year, Milan agreed to take the ban as it was in the mutual interests of both the club and Uefa.

It is likely to earn Milan a more favourable ruling from Uefa in terms of their overall FFP predicament, as they face breaches in the 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

In what respect would the loss of income and the non-participation of AC Milan in a major European tournament for the 2019/2020 season be seen as being in the interest of the club?

Because they won't be subject to the same FFP scrutiny due to not being in European competition. AC Milan are propped up, they can easily cover the loss of income.

I suppose that having their reputation somewhat tarnished will not concern them or their fans. What I would have liked to have seen is a ten year ban from any European competition, coupled with an extremely large fine of the type that would be seen to match the average income of the club. It is only strictures such as this that will be seen to have any effect on those very wealthy clubs.

I will - I need it. :)
(Have a look at the Ormiston results from last season and you’ll see why :D)

In your last ten matches of last season, you started off with a 3-2 home win against Edinburgh United, then only drew three and lost six of the following nine remaining matches, the worst result coming in the final match of the season, away to Jeanfield Swifts, where Ormiston ended up losing 8-1....a score not unknown to those Highland League followers of Fort William...:rolleyes:

They managed to get up within seconds of being fouled/falling - a feat virtually unknown in the men's game, they've not crowded the referee and largely accepted her decisions despite the quality generally being poorer than the men's officials.

Plus they faced two good teams en route - one more than the men who lost that game

Great to see the English Womens football team failing to qualify for the final of a major international tournament after a very poor performance in a semi final and dodgy VAR. Great to see traditions continue.

Connah's Quay Nomads 1 Kilmarnock 2

For me, the football season almost always starts in July watching Wales's finest in Europe. And what a fright the Nomads gave mighty Killie, taking the lead with an own goal 15 mins from time. It was their only effort on goal. However the referee saved Kilmarnock's blushes a few minutes later when he awarded them a penalty when the incident looked more like a foul on a Connah's Quay player to me. Then the Scots broke Welsh hearts by heading the winner from a corner a few seconds from the end of stoppage time.

Killie fans travelled in large numbers making for a great atmosphere. I guess when you play the same few sides over and over and over again in the SPL, its nice to have a change.

The game was switched to Rhyl as Deeside Stadium only has 420 seats - and it was a 1400-1500 sell out. Welsh teams seem reluctant to play European games in England. Large numbers of teams all across the continent have to switch European games because of ground grading. Looking at my little book, over the years, I have seen teams stage games at the following grounds.

At Rhyl: Rhyl, Bala Town, Prestatyn Town, Bangor City, Connah's Quay Nomads

At Bangor: Bangor City, Llandudno

At Wrexham: Airbus UK, TNS, Cefn Druids, Bangor City (plus Wrexham themselves many, many years ago)

At TNS: TNS

By sheer coincidence my first game last season was Killie vs St Mirren on the way back from Islay.

Steve Bruce has been appointed Newcastle United manager.

Wednesday fans aren't happy. He kept them up though, when at one point it was looking dubious.

Although I can't blame him for wanting to manage his childhood club, in the league above, for more money.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire though in terms of dodgy chairmen though. I#m intrigued to see what Wednesday will do next.

on a hiding to nothing. They have sold both strikers and Ashley wont give any money to spend.
That's another convenient excuse for him if it goes wrong then. He's a chequebook manager whose only route to success is buying in ready-made players on stupid wages.

If he does do well, he'll jump ship as soon as OGS gets the chop at Manchester United anyway...

Shall we be realistic? You aren't going to stay in the PL without some money to spend and someone who scores at least 15 goals a season. Being a Huddersfield fan should show that.........

We managed it the first season, by the skin of our teeth... our collapse last season was reality catching up with us, coupled with our chairman being ill and our overall lack of quality being found out. Most of our fans know our limitations and know that we won't ever compete for honours at the top table without a magic Sheikh or a Russian oligarch in charge.

A club like Newcastle has far higher expectations, will treading water be enough for those fans? Rafa was immune from criticism due to his reputation and the ire felt towards Ashley. I'm not sure Bruce will have as much protection as the fat waiter did.

Benetiz was popular because he did a good job with relatively few resources, stood up to the fat cockney and seemed to "get" the local people.

Actually Mike Ashley has so broken down Newcastle fans that their comedy high expectations have gone completely. The fans now are happy just staying in the PL!
