Northern Ireland Railways - passenger numbers pre 1995

Does anyone have or know where to find annual passenger numbers and passenger kilometres/miles for Northern Ireland Railways for the period 1984/5 to 1994/5?

NIR only seem to have the figures going back to 2000. However in 1997/8, passenger numbers were 829,740. Presently it's over 15 million I believe.

Figures from 1995 are readily available on line but I haven’t been able to track down earlier data

Wow that must be among some of the biggest growths in uk , excepting reopened lines.

While NIR has outperformed GB railways the growth has not been that great. 1997-98 saw 6.4m passengers while 2017/18 was indeed 15m.

The 1997 number contradicts the graph you supplied a post or two later.

It would appear it's not as great, as the 1997 figure I gave seems to be completely wrong. So much for using newspaper articles as sources!

The 1997 number contradicts the graph you supplied a post or two later.

To be honest I didn't bother looking at the graph myself I detail. The graph is from Translink sources, the figure I quoted earlier was from a new article.

The graph shows broadly steady numbers for years and years. What caused the sudden jump from around 2003?

Between 2001 and 2003, the Lisburn-Antrim line was closed and the Bleach Green (Belfast to Antrim via Whiteabbey) line re-opened. Belfast to Derry was shorter and faster on the newly re-opened line (albeit still slower than the bus)

Between 2004 and 2005, NI Railways replaced their 1970s Class 80 stock with brand new Class 3000 trains, and also refurbished their 1980s Class 450 stock to a similar standard as the new trains.

Between 2011 and 2012, the Class 450 stock was replaced with brand new Class 4000 trains.

Very, Northern Ireland Railways seem to be going from strength-to-strength, a lot of that must be down to the new trains which I believe were the first thing to encourage growth. That and the new clock face timetable in the early 2000s.

End of The Troubles. Just as you can see the steep decline when they started, around 1970. People were very keen to go door to door in their own secure cars.

Considering the significant number of incidents involving trains, you can't blame them
