I have seen quite a few 377's on southern metro lines.I am curious to why they have started popping up. I prefer them to the class 455s. Will southern try to put more 377's on the metro services?

Many metro routes have been almost exclusively 377 for quite a while now. Since the introduction of the 5 car units and the return of some 4 cars from Thameslink there are more of them and less need for 455s, which are now generally permanently run as 8 car trains.

Also the routes which transferred to Thameslink have increased the number of 377s available.

There are some exceptions to all of this but 377s do a lot of the metro work. Remember that the 377/6 fleet was procured for metro work and there has always been some 377s on metro work as slam door replacement because the 455 + 456 fleet was never sufficient.

* 455s are now allocated primarily to the following routes because of platform length restrictions at Caterham, Beckenham Junction, Coulsdon Town and Tulse Hill

London Victoria to Epsom Downs via Norbury
London Bridge to Beckenham Junction via Tulse Hill
London Bridge to Caterham via Tulse Hill
London Bridge to Coulsdon Town via Forest Hill (off-peak)
London Bridge to Sutton via Forest Hill
London Bridge to Sutton via Tulse Hill (peak)

There is, of course, no reason for the London Victoria to Epsom Downs via Norbury service to be 8-car. I guess they had to use the 455s somewhere.

* All London Bridge to Caterham / Tattenham Corner trains all day and almost all of the peak time London Victoria to Caterham / Tattenham Corner trains are 10-car 377/6 (377/7s are regarded as part of a common fleet with 377/6s)

* The remaining routes are shared between 10-car 377/3+377/3+377/1 or 377/4 and 10-car 377/6 or 377/7 formations (although some shorter 377 formations are used).

London Bridge to Epsom via West Croydon (fast to West Croydon)
London Bridge to London Victoria via Crystal Palace
London Victoria to West Croydon via Crystal Palace
London Victoria to Sutton via Norbury
London Victoria to Epsom via Mitcham Junction
London Victoria to Dorking / Horsham

The 377/1s and 377/4s obviously cycle off metro work onto longer distance stuff. The 377/6 and 377/7 fleet do Brighton and East Grinstead services at the weekend. Some metro work is part of the 377/2 diagrams.

I thought the 455's were used on some London Victoria to Sutton diagrams?
There is 1 455 which is booked for a late night London Victoria to Dorking run, as well as a pair of 455's booked for the 16:31 London Victoria to Caterham

Yep the Vic to Sutton and Vic to Epsom Downs are on the same cycle/diagrams..ie vic to Sutton, Sutton to Vic then forms Vic to Epsom Downs, Epsom Downs to Vic and so on (2Bxx's) So most of these are 455s.

A similar system works with the Vic to Horsham/Dorking/Epsoms and Vic to London Bridge/West Croydon (all exclusively 377s)

There are a couple of evening LBG to Epsoms that are 455s which are exclusively 377s during the day.

2x455s are used on Victoria to Epsom Downs all day weekdays. Also one of Victoria to Sutton all day diagrams is booked for 2x455s. There is a handful late evening Victoria to Epsom (not Dorking or Horsham) for 2x455 as such as some evening London Bridge to Epsom semi-fast and London Bridge to Victoria via Crystal Palace 2x455s do. Those are all parts of other diagrams.

That's right. They're different diagrams. Sole Victoria to Sutton 455s diagram starts at Selhurst 05:58 to Epsom Downs then return to Victoria and further Victoria to Sutton from 07:46 reppeating every 2 hours till 23:40. Another 455s diagram (part of) 20:16 and 22:16 Victoria to Sutton and return.
