Despite the DB site saying that high speed trains in Italy as res free, I believe that isn't correct. Previously have been easily able to book reservations on the Trenitalia website but I cannot find out how to do this now as doesn't seem to be an option. Has this been removed or am I missing something?

Basically all the intercity trains are reservation compulsory, even the DB-OBB EuroCity trains

With Trenitalia near enough everything long distance is globally priced, i.e. you buy an airline style ticket and reservation in one go and can't obtain them separately. The exception to this is Interrail/Eurail - is that what you're using?

Regional trains neither offer nor require reservations.

Sorry, I should have been more specific - yes I am using an Interrail so hence why only need the reservation.

Untill very recently-start this year, this was dead-easy to do at the machines, that offfer 6 languages for it. For IC/ICN-seat it is (was) 3eur, for Freccia)superfast) 10. However, again too much mis/use was found and now its reported to be only available with show of pass at ticket-office.
According to the old rules it was not perse needed to do it for IC, but highly recommended, as most seats are REServed anyway and not marked at all. Good luck with all that and please report back any experience for a lot of future users.

Just to clarify, you now do need a reservation, someone else on one of the EC trains used an IR pass, without a reservation and got charged a supplement to use the train.

Thanks for the replies. Not sure which train I'll be using so buying in advance isn't an option. Was hoping could do it online during the day, will have to buy at Milan when I get there by sounds of it (know that ticket office can be a nightmare in itself, took me an hour last time).

ItaliaRail will do it for you with an interrail online (I have in the last two weeks booked Interrail Global Pass fares on Frecce and Sleepers)

Was asked to post findings. Yesterday got delayed and needed last minute reservation on high speed service which I bought at Milan with no issues despite train leaving in 20minutes. Today used an ICN service from Florence to Bologna and ticket inspector said nothing about a Res and appeared quite a few passengers had got on without one
