Paying for on-line tickets with Paypal?

Had that cold-sweat moment. Bought a ticket on-line using paypal with the intention of collecting the tickets at the ATM later.

After purchase I realised you had to use your card to pick up those tickets *you insert and remove the card once accepted*.

The paypal account debits from my bank account directly, however the card I used was fine as it's the card associated with that same bank account; so I got the tickets no problem.

Made me wonder though - what is the situation if someone has their paypal linked to a certain account; and they buy tickets that way, but their only card is a credit card attached to a competely different bank? Would the ATM (Edit - TVM) accept the transaction so they can get their tickets OK, but on a wider issue what is the point of inputting your card when they have already been successfully paid for and you have a unique reference number?

Any card can be used to collect a ticket paid for by PayPal.

The rail industry has no idea of knowing what is going on within your PayPal account! It would be a major security issue if they did!

Do you mean the TVM (ticket vending machine)? Any card can be used. Why does it require a card to be inserted? I guess because that's the way the system was set up, and Paypal was not thought of at the time.

Some retailers default to any card collection for credit/debit card payments anyway, while others will change a collection flag to 'any card' upon request.

Yes, TVM! So no real reason to justify inserting a card? Would make the process slightly quicker if that part were eliminated and one simply inputted that unique reference.

It's more secure to have the card, though. Otherwise people could just go round inputting random references.

The best security is provided by "something you know plus something you have".

If they tried that, they would just insert their own/stolen card? I suppose if it's their own and they were trying to fraudulently obtain tickets by random guesswork it could trace them.

Precisely, the card details are recorded for tracing of possible fraud. Of course it could be a stolen card, but like a ticket barrier staffed by staff who can do nothing other than ask you to go to the TVM and buy a ticket if you don't have one (such as at most LNR stations now; the only way to get PFed or prosecuted is to meet one of the revenue squads who just do the very occasional sting) it's all a deterrent.

Would be a time-saver if every ticket had a download or print-at-home option, but mine didn't as there's no ability to do that with plusbus :( so I had to collect the paper tickets.

Anyhow, it's a big plus that you van use paypal and not have to worry about which card to use!!

I would expect so as neither of those exposes the original card number to the retailer.

Indeed, I know that with Apple Pay at least, the card issuer assigns another card number of which the cardholder is not even privy.

It only works with the device it’s registered to, it then interacts with the merchants POS terminal in the same way as a psychical contactless card.

If you get a receipt it will quote the last four digits of this mystical card number which would be different from the last four digits of the psychical card you hold.

I don’t think the merchant receipt shows the complete card number nowdays either so no one but Apple, the card issuer and the acquiring bank know what it is.

I imagine Android pay works in a similar fashion.

I like this card, can it read what you're thinking? (I know you mean 'physical' - this new card created by predictive text sounds quite interesting).
