The passengers around me just muttered about teething troubles and said what nice trains they are. I'm an old fart who prefers loco hauled coaching stock but these are really nice trains, especially when you consider that some passengers from the Airport to Lime Street the week before last were on a single pacer. It is almost laughable .
I think passengers are delighted - particularly when compared with the grotty 150/156s they had to endure previously. Even the conductors/guards are happy but then that's not surprising now they have new trains to be proud of rather than cowering away from passengers in embarrassment on grotty old trains. I just hope Northern look after them and clean them regularly.

"Public adress" with one "d"! Reminds me of a typo on the 397 data plates
They also think it's ok on the 195s to abbreviate Barrow-in-Furness to Barrw-in-Frnss but that's just weird. What's wrong with plain Barrow?

I believe that what you describe is Northern's doing, not CAF's, though.

Sounds like someone used to a BSI (which you do have to bang together sometimes) and not a Scharfenberg (which you just have to "kiss" together as the pneumatics/hydraulics do the work).
aren't they Dellners...? (I do understand that a Dellner is a derivative of a Scharfenberg, though)

Travelled on a new 195 yesterday, overall I'd say they're very good, but I do think that they look and feel a bit 'cheap', so should fit in really well at Northern!

Even so, it's an upgrade on what is there already!

On my return trip between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport at 3pm yesterday there didn't seem to be any issues releasing the doors, so perhaps they'd managed to get on top of that?

The PIS does seem, well, I'll be kind and say unfinished. So far I've done three journeys:
  1. Connections screen stuck on wrong information (I think it was Preston, on a previous journey).
  2. Estimated arrival times all one hour too early (time zones issue I assume).
  3. Insisting we're at Heald Green... almost all the way to Piccadilly.
The screens are good... but it seems the software that runs them needs work.

I believe that the (currently bad) PIS software is programmed by the PIS manufacturer, but the wierd abbreviated names are provided by Northern. I could be wrong, though.

The unit I'm on at the moment (195121) doesn't have any abbreviations for station names on the PIS, they're all named in full. 195118 yesterday was the same.
I'm not sure where people are seeing the abbreviations?

Northern are bound to have some gremlins with the information that’s being put out via the screens. I’d bet good money that whatever version of software is running on the TMS system at the moment will be a different one by the end of the year. Our 221 is on version 29. at the moment!

The abbreviations occur on the PIS page that shows just the destination and next stop in a large font, to meet the PRM requirements for the visually impaired. It is only the longer station names, such as Barrow-in-Furness and Wigan North Western, that are abbreviated.

It would strike me that "Barrow" and "Wigan" are the sensible abbreviations for these, given that Barrow only has one station that has that in the name (we aren't DB, and so wouldn't do something like "Barrow-in-Furness Dalton" and "Barrow-in-Furness Roose") and there are no trains that serve both Wigan stations.

Only version 29 on an 18 year old train...? That's relatively good going!

Haven’t had a ride on one of these yet but they look quite impressive at Oxford Road.

Sleek, quiet, seemed to clear the station really quickly like a 350. We just need more of them now...

Not on every unit then. Neither 195118 nor 195121 have used any abbreviations at all on the screens that I've seen, and I've just spent the 25 mins from Ox Road to Wigan staring right at one.

After getting a double 195 from Parkway to Lime Street yesterday at around 17:50 I was a little disappointed to be on a single 195 on the 15:50 from Manchester Airport to Lime Street today. Doesn't matter how much an improvement it is over a pacer if you are sat on the floor.

A quick look at RTT suggests things have run much better today.

Which is pretty good for a new introduction, even if they are late. Better than most anyway!!

Just roll out more 195s now or asap and get rid of those hideous 142s off to the scrap man, never mind turning them into meeting places or such like. GET RID!

It does because your not getting that thud, thud, thud going through your backside and also without the engine screaming.

Ah right. Have you sat on the floor of one yet? Unless capacity is going to be increased what is the point? To be fair I believe the service will eventually be a double two car unit.

I'd have thought the floor of a 195 is still more comfortable than the floor of a Pacer!

But they still can't bring themselves to say "London Euston" on the 221 front PIS. :)
The 195 front display is at least large and of decent width, and doesn't need to scroll (I think).
Wait till TfW/WMT get gangwayed units with a useless tiny front display like 158s...

Ha ha, how would that work? Look they are nice trains but if they are going to run three car units with one toilet instead of two 156's with two bogs the fun of it smelling like a new car is soon going to wear off.

Slightly off topic, is there actually going to be a mechanical difference between the Class 195 and Class 196?

Why were they assigned two different class numbers, when 1xx class numbers are in such short supply?

Just seen my first one run through Deansgate. They look very smart indeed! You can really tell that diesel technology has come some way since the 150/6/8s were built. Big progress for the North, I'm very pleased. Now to get those TPE services up and running.

Class 196 will have through end corridor connections i believe.
