Two men have died after being hit by a train on the line between Bridgend and Port Talbot.

British Transport Police said they were pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a train at around 10am.

The two men who died were a 58-year-old man from North Cornelly and a 64-year-old man from Kenfig Hill who were working on the railway lines at the time.

A third railway worker was treated at the scene for shock but was uninjured.

Superintendent Andy Morgan from British Transport Police said the two men who died were wearing ear defenders at the time and did not hear the train approaching.

Network rail posted something on Wales online stating trains likely to be disrupted until 2pm. Some services being diverted which I find strange as there isn't an alternative route between bridgend and port Talbot unless they mean the tondu to Margam line

From the BBC:
Two rail workers have died after three people were hit by a train between Port Talbot Parkway and Bridgend stations.
Network Rail said the incident happened just before 10:00 BST near Margam and investigations were ongoing.
Transport for Wales said all lines were blocked and services running through the stations may be cancelled or delayed and disruption was expected until 12:00.
The Wales Ambulance Service confirmed it was in attendance.
A Rail Accident Investigation Branch spokesman said: "We are aware of an incident between Port Talbot and Pyle. Two inspectors are now travelling to site gather evidence."

Outside Port Talbot Steel Works. Possibly emergency evacuation of the train, 0929 Swansea to Paddington. Thoughts with all involved especially the driver.

Thoughts to the families, the train operator and all involved. Hopefully RAIB can ensure that their deaths are not to be repeated; no one should have to suffer an avoidable accident at work and it's incumbent on all of us to work to that goal.

I add my thoughts there, what a terrible thing to happen. No one expects to not be able to go home. RIP :(

Now we know the true awfulness of today, my thoughts go out to the families of the people who started their day as normal. By just going to work. And of course to the driver who must be horrified and in total shock.

Condolences to all involved, such a tragedy.

Fatalities on the railway are always tragic, even more so when it involves staff simply doing their job.

RIP.

Terrible news, NR’s campaign for everyone home safe always had a poignant feel to it, and this really gets to you when some don’t. RIP to the staff, and condolences to their families. Hope the 3rd member of staff makes a full recovery and thoughts with the Driver and any other staff involved down there.

Some of the news sites have stated that they've been told that the signaller wasn't aware that there were workers on the line for some reason. However I would stress that this is very much speculation and that obviously the investigating authorities will do their work and then there'll be a clear explanation of what went wrong. Whatever the reason two people died and one was injured and the circumstances need to be examined to prevent it from happening again, as far as is practicably possible.

Tragic, I am shocked and saddened to hear that this has happened. Hopefully the RAIB can identify what went so badly wrong here.

Really tragic, thoughts to all those involved.

Service wise, nothing between Cardiff and Swansea with the exception of Vale of Glamorgan that go via Llantwit and Maesteg services. Bus replacement throughout with no time for reopening. To echo what mpthomson said above, no reason why as of yet.

Terrible news, thoughts to all involved. A reminder to everyone that the railway can be a dangerous place and none of us should ever be complacent about that.

I'd have thought services would turn back at Port Talbot (and possibly Bridgend). But I won't go double-guessing the staff that are working to keep passengers moving, or think ill of those more directly involved in the incident.

TfW just tweeted that services are now starting to start and terminate from Cardiff/Bridgend. So some services should be on the move soon.

Service wise, from West Wales trains are starting/terminating Port Talbot, and from the other direction, services are starting/terminating Bridgend. Exceptions are Maesteg and VoG services which are running as normal. There are no GWR services operating west of Cardiff

Service information can be found on our twitter and on the website, it's the opposite of internal. I agree with you if internal stuff about the incident is leaked before the proper channels confirm anything. Speculation only leads to confusion for passengers and staff on the front line
