So Hamilton binning it in second practice isn’t a mistake? He was so so lucky that it was a Friday gearbox. I believe Vettel’s penalty was extremely harsh. The championship is over now. I don’t believe there is anything Vettel could have done. Hamilton fans maybe salivating over a cruise to the Championship for him now but I reckon most proper fans are probably fed up with it. He is that far ahead even if Vettel is winning a few races he can easily afford a few second or third place finishes. The Sky Sports pundits like Jenson Button all said that Hamilton didn’t go for the overtake in the last few laps because he knew Vettel had the penalty. Another championship down another Mercedes dominance. :frown:

There's no racing in F1 anyway so a five second penalty makes no difference to the championship anyway, even if the penalty hadn't happened it would still be one of the dullest races possible since all Vettel and Hamilton could do was drive round in formation the entire time. Canada is one of the best F1 tracks and this was supposed to be one of the best races of the year since Vettel could finally race with Hamilton, the joke is this probably will be one of the best races of the year...

As to why I'm commenting on an F1 thread, it has been all over the headlines and piqued my interest although as usual it seems the actual drama around the race is far more interesting than the race itself.

Is there anyone still awake???

It's time Formula Boredom was put out of everyone's misery. I bet Sky can't even give away free passes to get people to watch this monotonous garbage.

Well this years French GP was one of the most boring races I've watched for a long time, apart from the last couple of laps. For Hamilton to lap everyone up to and including 7th place is just rubbing salt into an open wound. Do you guys think that Ricciardo will get a post race time penalty (or two as he did it twice) for leaving the track, rejoining it in an unsafe manor and gaining an advantage.... Would be a bit unfair on Vettel if the stewards didn't give Ricciardo a penalty

It says something about current F1 when most of the interest and talking points are either about the last lap or events post race.

The worst part was cutting away from the Norris, Riccardo, Raikkonen & Hulkenberg battle to Hamilton winning and Bottas vs Leclerc.

It would be interesting to know this year's TV viewing figures, though I doubt anyone will be too quick to publicise them. For me, the combination of Hamilton & Mercedes winning everything in sight*, processional races, live coverage only on Sky which I won't entertain, and "highlights" programmes which are mostly talking heads (due to Sky's restrictions), have pretty much wiped out any interest from me. That's despite having watched F1 since the Jim Clark era, and having a family friend working for the Red Bull team.
*I'm not blaming them, indeed I prefer to see them winning than tantrum-baby Vettel and Ferrari, but it does sap the interest.

I've lost some interest now we have only highlights usually on at stupid o'clock. I will still record and watch them as I want to enjoy Hamilton's extraordinary career while I can.

And they think this is a product good enough for people to pay for?

What a cracking race, night and day from last week. But if the stewards take this away from him then Formula One is finished as a wheel to wheel spectacle.

The fia should either apologise to Vettel or enforce the precedent set at Canada and penalise the fake dutchman.

The incidents aren't even comparable.

Over 3 hours since race end and still no decision. F1 had a great chance to win people back today, the stewards are making a hash of it.

The incidents are not comparable but based on the current rules, if Vettel gets penalised then Crashtappen should have been penalised too. Both didn't deserve penalties but that is not how the rules are at the moment. Ferrari should be rightly frustrated at the lack of consistency in applying the current rules

Interesting that next year we should be seeing the return of Zandvoort - the Netherland's Grand Prix, no surprise there and welcome back on to the circuit, and mainly if not wholly due to Max's popularity (not just in the NL's either!). What IS a surprise is that it's in early May (scheduled) risking not only rain, but even snow(!!) and it's not leaving long to redevelop the track as promised, and as this is a rail forum I notice the Dutch Railways (NS) want to get the fans to the stadium, but that requires longer trains needing more power and they have 10 months to prepare - and who pays??
https://www.gpfans.com/en/articles/39539/dutch-gp-at-zandvoort-could-cause-rail-chaos/
Dutch Railways raised the alarm to Dagblad van het Noorden, warning that a lot of work will have to be done on the rail link to get the fans to the circuit.
"The extended timetable with longer trains is not possible with the current energy supply on that route," said a spokesperson. "We therefore ask ProRail to improve the overhead contact line, because more power needs to go there."
According to the Dutch Railways, studies have shown that putting on larger trains to Zandvoort with the current infrastructure would quickly lead to malfunctions.

Which rules?

Vettel was penalised as he left the circuit, rejoined unsafely and in doing so forced another driver off the circuit.
Verstappen stayed on circuit, was slightly in front on the track and so could take his line - LeClerc had the option to back out to ensure he made the corner without leaving the circuit.

Personally I think both incidents were "racing incidents", but as soon as a penalty is applied that affects the race leaders time, then those following will drive differently. Thinking back to Vettel's past behaviour, would you attempt a pass if you knew that sitting 4 seconds behind you would gain the win?

Looking at the replays, LeClerc did turn towards Verstappen but then changed course when he realised a collision was imminent. Had there been a collision, it would have been LeClerc who would have got a penalty. That neither of them got a penalty shows that the stewards were being fair and the time taken indicates that they were looking very carefully at every aspect of it.

Vettel came back on unsafely. He really did. A penalty was harsh but the teams wanted fixed penalties for fixed offences, so that's what they got.

Verstappen's move was dodgy but probably just the right side of the line. He had the corner, he can take whichever racing line he wants.

Ricciardo's penalties in France were much harsher.

Lewis Hamilton show then this weekend is it?
Shall be giving the tv a wide birth then.
Well channel 4 anyway.
Is the BTCC on this weekend as that’s always a good laugh with messers Plato & Neal.
Or is it that Tour de France nonsense which to be honest has never been a good laugh (in my opinion anyway)
If people want to watch sweaty blokes in Lycra then that’s fine.
Our next door neighbour will get arrested one day I’m sure with what he wears when in the saddle.
He looks a right t*t especially after a ride when he can hardly walk due to his saddle lol.
