Didn't they abandon a very similar service just a few months ago?

Can't really see this being a success either.

The 16, which after Four Mile Inn took a totally different route and was effectively a copy of the 727 that served Craibstone Park & Ride, where as the X27 serves other areas around the Airport and restores/provides new connections.

The X27 has loads of potential, it's too early to really call it a success or failure.

With the vast amount of time it took to build the park and ride with the delays, it could have been First made a commitment to serve it, hence the 16 was tried.

That's possible, not to mention they changed the 18 at the same time, so it was fitting to try something new out at that end of the city. The 16 did start to pick up towards the end of 2017 and in to 2018, however at most i only saw 10 passengers beyond Four Mile.

Although i don't want to doom the service so soon, i do suspect at some point they may actually alter it to go to Dyce Asda (After the Railway Station) rather than the Heliport.

Has it gained the new Aberdeen white/green scheme?

It has indeed. At the point of this photo it still needs to get some more vinyls and have the wheels done.

@Jordan Adam thanks for confirming, appreciated. It's a fine scheme, that, so hopefully now we may see more sooner rather than later!

Indeed, it's taken some time to get a second vehicle done. Mainly down to management wanting to rush through the bulk of the buses in West Lothian, however Aberdeen repaints should be picking up now.

I'll likely take a walk round the depot on Sunday morning, so i'll see if there's any sanded down buses sitting at the rear.

62151 was collected from the depot today for preservation, she'll be at Alford on Sunday before going off for repaint soon.

69284 looks like it is getting prepared just now.

Thanks, it looks like they're working down through the Blue examples. I'd assume 69282 will be next.

Coinciding with previous posts 69290 returned from repaint last night and 69284 should've left either late last night or this morning for repaint.

The open day at The Bus Collection At Alford was held today. In attendance from First were Enviro500 38225 and Panther 20806. In addition to this K1GRT was doing passenger "Tours" around the Alford area including on some rather twisty B-Roads, this would be her first time carrying any form passengers since 2008. B10BLE's 62151 and V258DPS also made their debuts in preservation.

Was a great day out. We had hoped to get a tour on 131 but it run out of fuel and was replaced by K1GRT. It's still in great condition and handled the back roads exceptionally considering the length and the fact it was built for city use.

Should've came over and said hi! I was on V258DPS quite a bit of the day. I had a ride out on both K1GRT (on her second run) and E131DRS, so i can vouch with what you say about how well they both run.

I know technically it is Firstbus, but these were Grampian buses, is it just me or did Grampian take good care of their buses, I can't remember any time when I grew up where I saw any being towed back to King Street on low loaders or sitting in a bus stop with their engine covers up.

Usually it happened with acquired buses like the Northampton Olympians, and of course old bus 1! Some of their own Olympians were quite bad, 124 for a long time and, latterly, 126,

I lived in Aberdeen between 1992 and 2003. I recall that the Grampian fleet was always fairly well turned out, and there did seem to be a fairly regular programme of repainting. There were a few breakdowns I'm sure, and while memories are getting hazy with time, I think most niggles were with the newer Mercs, Scanias and Drats that were being introduced.

Nice to see Aberdeen’s repaints picking up again. I really like the new livery. It would be great to see an E500 or Artic done in the new colours!

I am planning on visiting the collection later this year. no special events on at the time of my visit but looking forward to it nonetheless.

As with any operator there were breakdowns, but prior to First and post de-regulation standards were the highest. Even in terms of routes there was a clear peak the quality of coverage, variation and frequency in the late 90s. The 2001 changes following subsidy cuts were what killed off many routes. Reliability however remained pretty good through the 00s, this however could partly be down to the fleet being very young at the time. In all fairness even today for all their operational failings (poor routes, lack of repaints etc) Aberdeen's fleet is quite reliable.

I can't see an Artic being done, it's very likely these will be gone in the next year or so. The E500's would look good once done up, although likewise i suspect they'll be wanting to do the B7RLE's, E300s and Gemini's first as the bulk of the E500's are still externally quite fresh in comparison.

I would imagine some people would say that in the 80's and early 90's that buses were simpler fares than now, but I must admit the Atlanteans kept going for a good few years and the Olympians were in pretty good nick too when they were being withdrawn in other places.

Grand photo - such a pity the base colour isn't ivory or cream.

The idea is to keep it consistent with other Scottish Ops. Ivory/Cream would look awful with the route branding. Although i do to some extent wish they had done more on the front.

Rail replacement companies issue diagrams which details the journeys the coach companies are required to make. First Coach Hire did have enough drivers and vehicles to cover it however when vehicles are off the road etc they use Allan and Black, Simpsons, Peace Coaches, JP coaches and MacPhails. They have never and would never use RS of Sauchen. Sometimes they take work on commercially and then contract it out for a lower price and take the cut.

They were took off the rail work about 4 weeks ago, they've not got any different coaches now to then, they had the 4 Levantes and Sunsundegui you mention when they had the contract taken off them. Also, the 4 Levante's aren't refurbished, they're disgusting. Trust me, I've driven them. They're filthy, toilets broken and stinking and have been poorly maintained in their previous lives which Aberdeen depot haven't done anything about to rectify their issues. They've got 1 panther so far which was in reasonable condition when it arrived and it's looking a lot worse now than it did when it arrived a few months ago. The other 2 panthers still haven't arrived, I'll believe it when they arrive at the depot and I drive them! They aren't being converted for tour work, that ship has long sailed, they're being converted to be able to do private hire work at weekends and schools through the week. They're still ex-service coaches, just with a toilet fitted. Nothing else is changing, they aren't getting boilers, fridges or even retrimmed or deep cleaned.

They have used RS before in the past, although i'd agree it's uncommon, likewise they've used Watermill in the past but again it's uncommon.

The Panther's were the vehicles i was mentioning when i said it was "too little too late", 2 Plaxton Elite's were also meant to be joining Coach Hire last year (I'll try and find a photo of the two in question) but the purchase of them fell through (This was around the same time they bought 20812). Agree regarding the Levante's, they're pretty unreliable which is to be expected for Levante. The Panther they currently have (20613) doesn't look that bad, i had a decent look round it last Sunday and it still seems fairly tidy minus the carpet on the side walls - additionally they've finally sorted the mirrors out so they match. One of the things that bothers me with FACH is the clear lack of interest in presentation, perhaps one of the more stand out examples being that they'll put wheel trims on the front wheels but not on the rear wheels and vise-versa. Private hire at weekends would still be touring, albeit day tours. Quite surprising if what you're saying about the 2011 Panther's not getting a deep clean is true.

I take it you're yet another Ex-FACH driver? Not expecting the coach hire side to be lasting much longer, the only worth left in it really is the school contracts, but then even with those you have to question if it's worth having a totally different brand and team of drivers. I believe the supervisor (or whatever his full role title is) has jumped the ship now too.

First Aberdeen are to introduce "Tap in" and Capping for Contactless payments this Sunday. This co-incidences with some fare increases - however M-Tickets prices once again remain frozen.

https://www.firstgroup.com/aberdeen/news-and-service-updates/news/changes-our-fares

Our fares will change on Sunday 21st July 2019.
We want to make sure that you're prepared before you travel.

First Aberdeen is making changes to their fares from Sunday, July 21, but is continuing to offer customers the best value for money when they purchase tickets in advance of boarding the bus via its mobile ticketing App.

Most fares will change, but some will be frozen or reduced such as the on-bus Child Day, which is held at £2.60, while a Child Monthly mTicket, is available at the reduced price of £31.99 via the First Bus App.

For the parents looking to entertain the kids this summer, a Family Day mTicket is available at just £7.50, which is a saving of 50p compared to the same ticket purchased from the driver.

For frequent travellers, our best value Unlimited Ticket, which is a great option for commuters, has been held at the 2018 price of £57.90 per month.

  • First Aberdeen are making changes to their fares as of Sunday, July 21st

  • Customers can still find the best value fares on mTickets

  • First Aberdeen are launching Tap & Cap to offer customers more choice
and better value for their bus travel.

    Introduction of Tap and Cap
From July 28, customers can now enter into a capping environment on any service across the city network using their contactless payment card and the system will select the cheapest available fare based on their usage.

For example, tap once and a single fare is issued, but tap three or fours times in the same day and you will only be charged for a day ticket. This new option means there is even more value for customers on board their local bus network and with over 73% currently using cashless payments on our buses, the vast majority of our customers are set to benefit.
Ticket Type On Bus Price First Bus App Travel Shop
Group/Family £8.00 £7.50 n/a
Graeme Macfarlan, Commercial Director at First Aberdeen, said: “These changes are essential to allow us to continue to operate the highest level of service possible for our customers. We have worked hard to keep any increases to a minimum and continue to offer customers the best value fares via our mTickets App. Our focus on encouraging more customers to purchase mTickets will continue, as this helps improve journey times and punctuality, which are all factors that we know are vital to customers.

“We also wanted to continue with improvements across our contactless offering as Aberdeen has been the most progressive city across our entire UK bus operations and so it was the obvious choice for us to choose as the first of our operations to be upgraded to the new Tap and Cap contactless payment system.

“The new system guarantees that customers will always get the best value fare to suit their own travel needs based on their individual travel pattern and will make life easier for our customers making bus more accessible than ever.”

The singles and day tickets are getting far far far (yes i need 3) too expensive now. Although the likes of the family ticket still offer great value for money. Although personally i prefer using the Grasshopper multi-operator tickets especially given Zone 1 will only be 10p more than a FirstDay now.

Why the discounts on Service 17 only?

Also, a 20p increase in the night service won't help make it busier, however I'm convinced they want to kill it anyway.

Also, why is the gig n go return service more expensive than a day ticket? Both AECC and TECA aren't a particularly long way from Aberdeen

The Service 17 ticket which is valid on the 17, 17A, X27 & 172 is a move to compete up against the 727. Since the FirstDay is more expensive than the Stagecoach Zone 1 Dayrider (First have higher coverage, hence the higher day ticket fare).

Night services have been in decline since the oil downturn in 2016. Higher running costs make these expensive to operate. There's not been a increase in night service fares for quite some time. Although for those travelling in a larger group a Taxi could work out cheaper.

Gig n go is a dedicated shuttle service, hence the higher fares. Although i'd suspect the 727 will be more attractive in the evening now once TECA opens.
