A question as simple as it sounds really. We see numerous pictures of the exteriors of locos, and a few of the cabs, but very rarely see what's inside the engine and traction bays. I've seen a few of diesel locos, but I don't think I've ever seen the interior workings of an electric loco. I'm intrigued how much or indeed how little there is inside.

I've had a dig around on Flickr a few times, and just generally searched, but never found much. Does anybody have any pictures? Purely for academic purposes, I'm just nosey!

There's this video of the Class 89 on YouTube, including a walk through of the interior of the loco:

Considering that thing can churn out about 3,800hp, it's deceptively small!
I was thinking that.
I remember scraping burnt paint off the inside of 27007 in the 1990s and even though it only produced a third of the power of a 68 there was far less room between the power unit and the bodyside...
I love the way it’s all so clean too.

I know, it's spotless! How new is the loco pictured I wonder?

It looks brand new doesn’t it?
Although I think there may be a finger print on the second rocker cover if you look really closely...

Horsepower is horsepower. If its a smaller engine, they rev higher in general. My motorbike & car have similar power, but the bike is obviously smaller! Boat engines chug for years, but rev very slow, and are very big to get the torque. But then it gets much reduced wear & tear.

Those things are loud enough going past, nevermind standing next to it at 125mph! Love this thread, interesting to see areas never usually seen by the public, which generally isn't too many on trains. Anyone got an idea of what kind of dBs the engines output?

I’m not sure about the actual decibel level, but the difference between the MTU engines and the original Paxman ones at full power would be enormous if you standing in the engine room.

Not as much as you might think: the MTU fitted cars are better sound insulated so the noise doesn’t escape as much.

Indeed, I've had the pleasure of walking past an MTU in motion and they are noisy buggers!

For me, for sheer noise level, I don’t think anything will ever beat being in a fully enclosed basement generator room with three 12VP185s on full power, each kicking out 2MW of power. Absolutely deafening, even with ear defenders on.

That must have been quite something.
Didn’t realise the MTUs were that loud. They sound very subdued when passing compared to what went before.

I took some pictures of the inside of 43159 back in 2012. I also snapped a view inside 90045 earlier this year.
Got 404s on those images.

I got to see inside a genset for a data centre (one of three they had on site). They're basically in something the size of a long ISOtainer, and it's nearly all engine, plus an alternator - that's about all that's in there. They are BIG!

Not very interesting or informative but the first picture is inside a HUPAC ES64 U2 and the second inside an SBB 482. Both taken on 07 September 2002 at the Basel Wolf Guterbahnhof open day. Incidentally, transport to the depot was by a Re450 set brought over from Zurich - well out of its normal operating area! They don't seem to have problems with clearances in Switzerland like NR have here.
