Part of the medium term plan, (when I mentioned above street level entrances on the York Rd side) is that they do intend to make it much more open through towards the former County Hall area. Problem is that there seems to be an agreement not to commence demolition of Elizabeth House until some later date. The aim is to make that the normal entrance from the north west.

Google 'One Waterloo' if anyone wants to see what is currently Elizabeth House and what will replace it.

Isn’t there a loop of shops at St Pancras that no passengers at all have to walk past?
Shops don’t need literal walk past, just people to be passing through Waterloo who want to go to that brand.

The passageways between Platforms 19 & 20 (Main & former International parts) seemed to be closed on the two occasions I visited Waterloo today.

Not sure if appropriate signage was provided to notify passengers of this; quite a few were puzzled after walking half way down Pl 19.

There are some signs but not obvious. Reason for the closure is escalator refurbishment:

Apologies for the technical problems with the escalators on platforms 20-24 which we are working to resolve. The escalators on platform 20 will be closed from 15 to 30 July for repairs and the access between platforms 19 and 20 will also be closed during this period.

I was able to wander around the Orchestra Pit and undercroft last week. Incredibly poorly signposted at the moment, although I suspect that's deliberate given there's no easy way to get to the tube at the moment given the entrances are still closed, so it's almost useless as an area at the moment.

It's nice and wide and bright but very few people down there obviously. A few security guards but they didn't tell me off for my random walk as others have reported.

I wonder what the hold-up around the tube entrances is?

Big red A-frame sign by the set of barriers that lead to platform 19 tonight, mentioning that there is no access to platform 20 that way, so maybe they are listening here :)

I can't quite work out how work on the Platform 20-24 escalators affects the various connections through to 19 but that does seem to be the reason they're going with. 20 is in use as normal, my train this evening departed from it.

Does anyone have an update on this? Seems that this area is still not open for use

I always assumed the new tube route was needed for P20-24 to operate effectively.

I guess not.

It probably would be better, and spread flows to the Bakerloo/Northern out a bit, but I expect the gateline manpower savings mean no change until they are eventually forced to do so...

The stairs from P20-24 down to the Orchestra Pit and the subsequent right turn access down further stairs to the Underground are now open during peak hours. Some using them but lots of people still going on to the concourse or via P19. Nearly everyone in carriages 6-10 now using the escalators down from the platform.

Do you know whether the lifts down to the Underground level are operational?

I thought the route had been open for a while in the peaks only, had it been closed at some point?

At last! Are the new toilets open as well?

I've definitely passed through the lower concourse in the peak (although I don't travel through Waterloo regularly), although the underground entrance wasn't open the last time I was there, so that sounds like a development.

What is the rush? These former Eurostar platforms have been available for redevelopment for 12 years since the move to St Pancras. Indifference and prevarication is the theme for this development

Haha, about sums it up...

I'm sure once all the high end retail units are open, all that will be history..

The orchestra pit is now fully open, including the new Underground entrance and the rather posh (for Waterloo) new toilets. The toilets aren't that big so obviously supplementing rather than replacing the existing ones.

So that would appear to complete the railway work at Waterloo. Next up is the retail development.

Yes, used it in the Friday morning rush hour. It was very convenient for Bakerloo line and avoided the queues alongside platform 19 entrance.

It's a shame it can't be made bi-directional at quieter times. Mind you, I've noticed that some people already do use it coming out of the Underground!

Is that the new underground stairs going down out of the orchestra pit? I always thought they were a bit on the small side. Is it only signed downwards then?

Yes, signed as no exit from the Underground. It's actually a bit wider than it looks.

Very useful short cut indeed to the Underground.

Does that mean the lift down from P19-24 level to Orchestra Pit to W&C is not open all day rather than just in the peaks?

Thanks. Haven't been up to Waterloo for a couple of months so getting out of touch with changes...
