One cut due to the loss of paths in the 90s/early 00s - Stourbridge to New Street

Plus the dedicated Dudley to Sandwell and Dudley RRB

Brighton - Cardiff Central (or Great Malvern or Bristol) continues twice per day with FGW

The West Coastway did however lose Brighton-Paignton services, which became Bton-Reading than Bton to Basingstoke then stopped in 2007 (IIRC).

Fair point, forgot about that one. Certainly an oddity.

If my memory served me right, it was always a 4 car Class 365 and it went semi fast between Peterborough and Kings Cross via Hertford North (booked routed) then it formed the first Down Kings Cross to Kings Lynn service again as a semi fast up to Stevenage then all stations to Kings Lynn!

There was a Hartlepool to Whitehaven train which then became Nunthorpe to Whitehaven then Newcastle to Whitehaven before being withdrawn completely a couple of years ago.

Pre-operation Princess there were a lot of odd services by Virgin CrossCountry that have now been cut such as Aberdeen to the South Coast via the West Coast Main Line, Liverpool to Portsmouth, services to Swansea, Birmingham to Swindon, London Paddington to the North West, services to Poole and others.

This thread is for Rail services which have been withdrawn since privatisation. When did they cease?

I’ll start with a few examples:

  • Liverpool-Stansted Via Birmingham (Cut at New Street in 200?)
  • Coventry to Skegness (Until 2004; replaced by Coventry to Nuneaton service)
  • Manchester Airport to Skegness (Until 2008; cut back to Crewe)
  • Lincoln to Birmingham?? (until early 2000?? Cut back at Nottingham?)
  • Worcester to Birmingham New Street (Central Trains: ceased in 2004)
  • Chase Line to Stafford (ceased in 2005)
  • Worcester to Gloucester (December 2008 to December 2009)
  • Manchester Airport to London Euston (until 1999)
  • Rochdale to London Euston (until 2000)
  • Birmingham to Nottingham via Leicester (cut back to Leicester in 2004)
  • Blackpool to Scarborough (cut to York in early 2000’s)
  • Bristol to Oxford (stopped in 2000 by SRA)
This includes services that were stopped but later reintroduced for example:

  • Shrewsbury to London Euston (stopped in 1992; Reintroduced in 1998 stopped in 1999; Reintroduced to Marylebone in 2008; Stopped in 2011; Reintroduced to London Euston in 2014)
There is still a 2 hourly Worcester to Gloucester service. Only the London Midland daytime service was withdrawn, a once per week service continuing with London Midland, and then with West Midlands Trains late on a Friday evening right up until May of this year.

I'll have a go with Derby - Sinfin Central, based on the date of privatisation being 1 April 1994.

Although towards the end of the Derby - Sinfin Central being in service, the last couple of years was by a rail replacement bus, with services being withdrawn circa 1998/99.

Still in the Midlands region but switching west, Smethwick Rolfe Street lost its services to Stourbridge Junction in 1995 when the section of the ex Shrewsbury & Birmingham Railway (Great Western Railway) reopened from Birmingham Snow Hill to The Hawthorns, with the original connection to the Stourbridge Railway reinstated with a new station at Smethwick Galton Bridge, providing interchange with the Wolverhampton local services.
Smethwick Rolfe Street kept a token link with tbe Stourbridge line right up until about 2003. Departures at 16.43 from New Street to Hereford, and 21.45 to Great Malvern continues to call, and there was a departure from Hereford at about 18.40 ish, (the stock from the 16.43 from New Street) to Birmingham which continued to call.

Sat only - Birmingham to Ramsgate via Kensington Olympia and Bromley South. Cross Country. Sometimes Deltic hauled :D.

Also , for a while , XC - Birmingham to Swindon via Stroud. An attempt to run to Paddington but eventually given up. Eclectic mix of rolling stock used on this.

What about when the 'Night Riviera' sleeper ran from Penzance to London Waterloo for Eurostar connections?

  • Worcester to Birmingham New Street (Central Trains: ceased in 2004)
  • Worcester to Gloucester (December 2008 to December 2009)

There are still hourly trains from Worcester to Birmingham New Street and two hourly trains from Worcester to Gloucester.

Another service lost is Llandudno-Euston.

The Edinburgh/Glasgow to Plymouth sleeper.

Does the current timetable count? I looked at ScotRail and I would not be able to use the train to get to college now. It is possible but would require a trip to Dundee just to get a train back to a station that was passed through.

And Even after a trip to Dundee and back.. I would still be an hour early!

Up until the early 2000's Anglia trains ran a Basingstoke to Ipswich service via the North London line. I remember travelling on the service from Feltham to Stratford.

I have a feeling that it didn't stop at Willesden Junction. If my memory is correct, that was an odd thing to do, as it's the main interchange station on the NLL.

That's right - it stopped at Highbury & Islington, Camden Road (weekends only), West Hampstead, Brentford, Hounslow etc. Also called at odd places such as Ingatestone.

Lots of services ran into Waterloo from the north and west to connect with Eurostar. Intended as prelude for north-of-London services, but ended up with about three people on them - they were barred for non-Eurostar travelers.

I don't recall non Eurostar travellers being barred, at least for the South Wales and West services. Other TOCs may have had their own conditions. The 0600 Carmarthen - Waterloo had compulsory reservations east of Bath Spa and was set down only at stations from Salisbury. The return at 1818, later 1918 had similar arrangements.
Not sure where it started from but there was an overnight SW&W service to Waterloo via Reading. The return service in the early hours was Waterloo - Maesteg and called at Swindon around 0600.
I also recall a Penzance to Liverpool via Newport service and Pontypridd - Birmingham International.

Another planet...
I could be imagining this, but was this Llandudno-Wakefield Westgate for a few years?
It was, but only in BR/Provincial Sector days. Usually 156-operated but occasionally saw 142s and even 101s.

One lost service I personally miss is the once a day Leeds to Sheffield via Huddersfield in the evening peak. This formed the peak extra Penistone line service which left Huddersfield at 1822. An extra still runs, but is now formed from an inbound service via Brighouse and isn't advertised as a through service.

I think it was in connection with Filton Abbey Wood opening (1996) and ran until to the separation of Wales and West into Wales and Borders and Wessex Trains in 2001. 0712(?) Highbridge and Burnham to Haverfordwest. This ran non stop from Highbridge to Worle avoiding Weston-super-Mare.

Blackpool North-York services used to go to Scarborough every other hour, as well as the Hull-Manchester service going to the Airport. Some of those services started up the Yorkshire Coast Line, at Bridlington or Scarborough. Obviously Newcastle Transpennine services used to go to Sunderland. There were Newcastle/Tyne Valley-York services that went via the Durham Coast, Middlesbrough and Yarm, which I don't go south of Middlesborough anymore (only down the Esk Valley now). Interestingly I also found a peak time Middlesbrough-Beverley and a Filey-Manchester Airport via Scarborough service.

The Stafford to Stoke-on-Trent local service, which called at Norton Bridge, Stone, Barlaston and Wedgwood - finished in about 2003/04ish I think (withdrawn due to work on the West Coast Route Modernisation project and never reinstated).

Of the intermediate stations it served, only Stone has since regained a regular service (I think Norton Bridge has now officially closed, but Barlaston and Wedgwood are nominally still open but have only been served by rail replacement buses for about the last 15 years).
