hey everyone, I’ve been reading through the threads as I have my dmi on Monday with southeastern. A lot of helpful information it just wondered if anyone that’s recently had their dmi could help me out with specific questions they might that may catch me off guard? ‍♀️

I’ve been through this process with mtr a few years back and failed on the dmi so I’m quite nervous as I really really want this!!

Also, i know I will be questioned about what I know about the company, do I need to know specific routes and stations, like where the driver depots are, what stations they service and how many employees they have etc? It just seems like soooo much information to retain on top of the TPWS as well ‍♀️

Hi, not gone through the process with SE but tbh it can’t hurt to know the routes, depots, what class of trains they have, lines they operate (not familiar with SE but mainline, slow line etc), their franchise agreement (and sister companies such as thameslink and southern etc). I know someone who failed the DMI with MTR because they didn’t know much about MTR as a company so I really do think it helps having some basic knowledge.

Thanks, yea with mtr the reason they gave me for failing was that I didn’t know enough about the company but I told them when it was founded, where they run routes, when new routes would be open etc, I did so much research and thought I gave them enough so now I’m extra worried about the interview because I felt prepared before and Didn’t pass. I’m not even sure what else I could have told them about the company

Yep exactly the same as my friend. He said they wanted to know about MTR, not just crossrail (I.e Hong Kong, think they have shopping centres, railway in Sweden etc).

Hi, Don’t mean to sound harsh, but your out to impress, the more the know in my eyes the better you look and it shows you’ve done your homework.
Fingers crossed you pass and if you think that’s a lot of information to retain, you wait until you start your training.
Good luck...what depot it’s for ?

Yes, I told them all of this, they have residential property in Hong Kong as well. It definitely felt like they were looking for reasons to not employ me, I think that’s why I’m so nervous this time round. From reading other threads I’m worried I’ll over prepare and get tripped up on technical questions when I’ve just memorised random information and can’t elaborate. Then on the flip side I’m worried I won’t be prepared enough. I wish I had a list of interview questions so I knew what i was walking in to haha

Victoria bottom link covers all SE metro routes, depots and sidings except the Grove Park - Bromley North poppers. There's also Maidstone East line work to Canterbury West and trips to Faversham. Top link might still go to the coast but I know a lot of that work was lost. Top link sign to Selhurst depot too.

Traction wise, Vic drivers sign 465/466, 375 and 377s (top link only I believe). I think bottom link might sign 376s too but not 100% sure.

Good luck with the interview.

Went ok. I can't remember the exact questions but if you do your research you will be ok. It was structured like the dmi. Going for Victoria.

Well done everyone who got through!

The biggest challenge on SE, after passing rules and traction, is keeping your record clean. The vast majority of metro drivers - and especially newly qualifieds drivers - have incidents on their file. A driver who gets past 3 or 5 years incident free is a rarity at metro depots. I'm not exaggerating.

Take every bit of advice on board you can about commentary driving, non-technical skills etc because the likelihood is that 80% of the people on your rules course will balls up in their first year or two. I don't want to scare anyone, but just a heads up to never switch off for a second out there and never get complacent.

Enjoy the course. Keep your noses clean for 3 years and you can move to a coastal depot or another TOC.

Yes mate, looking forward to it. Have you had your medical already? Is the course being held in Orpington?
Yeah mate I had my medical in June, no idea where it is, I’m in a mainline depot though so I’m pretty confident I’ll be training in Ashford

Well done all - there are a lot of new, young and diverse drivers at SE at the moment so hopefully a good dynamic. A lot have come from SE stations / conductors. Have a positive attitude and once you're passed out make sure you let passengers know what's going on if there are delays!
