Sounded like a good day in Peterborough bud. Its somewhere I fancied for a day out myself, especially with the 700s getting there.
I wonder where your next trip report might be from.

There are certainly worse places than Peterborough to fester. Alas, waiting until a 90 arrives to take you to Newark is no longer an option :'(

Dare I whisper it, but Stafford has much better variety of locomotives.

WCML in general has much more variety. A day at Acton Bridge can regularly bag you 60/66/68/70/86/88/90/92, with a 37/47/57/67 or two often thrown in for good measure!

ECML is just shed after shed after shed...

Going Loco Down In........East Lancashire - Thursday 4th July 2019

Part 1 - A journey to a better time

What seems like an absolute age ago now, @47403 happened to mention that he intended to visit the East Lancashire Railway for their Summer Diesel Spectacular. Having failed in my attempt to visit the SVR Gala, it seemed like a good opportunity to finally experience a gala day for myself. So after a little bit of planning I was heading to the local last Thursday to jump aboard the first XC working of the day to Manchester Piccadilly. 220029 was my opening haulage winner of the day as we headed off bang on time for the 60 minute run to Piccadilly on the lightly loaded Voyager. That didn't last long as our first stop at Stoke-on-Trent soon ensured we went from lightly loaded to very loaded but again my aftershave was keeping the strangers at bay. DR75009 was sighted as we headed past the North Sidings at Stoke and then one of the GB 56s being refurbished was spotted outside Longport minus it's roof. Definite proof that the work goes on to refurbish the GB grids into their new specification. The next stop at Congleton saw me lose that free seat next to me as we became overloaded for the run to Manchester and with nothing else to see (just set 6 of the Mk5A TPE stock on show at Longsight) it was a case of enjoying my music until we reached the end of the line in the train shed at Piccadilly
220029 at Manchester Piccadilly by The_Train

My first sight at Piccadilly was one to make you rub the eyes at that time of the morning, as 150105 was sat in its LM livery with winner 142037 attached as they waited for the off to New Mills Central
150105 by The_Train

I had a quick scout inside the train shed but there was little of interest until I spied 150140, which kindly went into the book before I bravely ventured over to the infamous P13/14 to risk the wrath of the platform staff should I dare to breathe outside of their trusty red area. It was worth it though for me to sight 195102, which becomes my first 195 to be seen in passenger operation. A quick wander back into the main shed saw me rack up a few more duds from Northern and TfW before it was time to head back to P14 for my next move, a short hop around the Ordsall Chord to Victoria. 319373 was just arriving as I made my way down the stairs (yes, I did this before my train was arriving - naughty The_Train) and this was quickly followed by 319371 which came by on P13 before my next steed rolled in, 185120 doing the honours and becoming my 2nd haulage victory of the day for the short hop to Victoria. The crawl through Oxford Road allowed me to log dud 156429 and winner 156461 before, after what seemed like an age, we made it to Victoria. I'd beaten @47403 by about 15 minutes so I ventured to P3 to see if I could nab a couple more Northern items before his arrival and, after a couple of duds, Victoria didn't let me down. First 156441 fell, and then 156424 quickly followed before a pair of 150s arrived with required 115 leading and dud 149 in tow. 185148 was next in and although a dud for sight, it was transporting my company for the day as Mr 403 made his appearance in the West Midlands and wow did he arrive in style. As we awaited a biomass freight move, the Geordie spent a few frantic minutes attempting to locate his ticket for the barriers - a Geordie in distress is never a pretty sight  - and after emptying every pocket, searching through anything that could hold a ticket and checking every area of his bag (well neatly every area) his ticket was located in the one place he'd neglected to look previously. It wouldn't be the last thing to go 'missing' either :E

Anyway, after that mini drama we watched dud 66714 roll through with its biomass wagons and I noted 185134 in the hope it was one of my few remaining 185s, (it wasn't) before we headed for the barriers which gladly ate both of our tickets whilst allowing us our escape onto the concourse. Thanks to the cash machine at Stafford having no money, I required a cash point but after finding out there was no such thing on the station we had a stroll up the road to one. This wander from and to Victoria did allow us both to start logging the Metrolink trams and over the next few minutes I logged the following:
3006, 3015, 3116, 3089, 3050, 3046, 3058 & 3005

We found our way onto the correct Metrolink platform and made use of the ticket machine. Unfortunately the one I chose didn't like either of the £20 notes I'd received from the cash machine but fortunately I mustered the correct money together and eventually got it to give me a ticket. @47403 had similar problems and had to try a couple of machines before he also got his ticket but eventually we were sorted and back focussed on the trains and trams. 150125 and 153330 arrived into P1 before it became all about the trams as we logged the following whilst waiting at Victoria:
3072, 3074, 3009, 3070, 3067, 3007, 3003, 3049, 3004, 3057 & 3091

Before 3005 and 3058 became my first logged haulage on this tram system for the jaunt up to Bury Interchange. 47403 took the window seat and this kept him busy checking out what went past us and between Victoria and Bury, we were able to log the following:
3071, 3048, 3001, 3019, 3021

We were soon heading into Bury and I was advised to keep my eyes left as we did because we would be passing one of the ELR yards and it was a good job I had Mr 403 with me as this allowed us both to log 08944.

And with that we were soon off the tram and heading towards the Bury Interchange exit for the short walk to the ELR and with 12 heavy rail winners and 14 tram winners, it had been a good start to the day. Time for the main event now though......that will come in part 2

I liked how I kept becoming different generators through that.

Not a bad start, I never realised how well youd done that morning and I'm glad one of us got to ID a 195 on the day.

I look forward to the rest.

Haha, I had that many numbers going through my head I'm amazed I got so close each time. I've amended it now

I know, christ, at one point I was looking through my bag for my wallet and I'd already put it on the table I was sat at.:lol:
Putting my head out the window not sure if it was for the 20s or D1501 up to Rawtenstall, where I had the black line on my forehead.

Going Loco Down In........East Lancashire - Thursday 4th July 2019

Part 2 - My first ever gala

The walk to the ELR was short but not without some more Geordie based drama as @47403 decided it was his phone that he wanted to lose next. After another hunt through his belongings, the phone was located and we were on our way to the Bury Bolton Street ticket office where my companion had to pick his ticket up from. That will be nice and simple, I hear you say! Well it was after Mr 403 had had 3 goes at getting his postcode right....I'd been more entertained in the last 30 minutes than I had previously in a long time, so thanks for that mate :E

Anyway, Mr 403 had gotten all of that out of his system and it was to be all about thrash, clag, noise and classic traction for the next 7 hours or so. Our arrival onto the Bolton Street platform was met with the sight of a lovely looking D7629 which was sat awaiting departure to Heywood
D7629 at Bury Bolton Street by The_Train

Despite a slightly forlorn look to it, there was most definitely nothing wrong with it mechanically as when it eventually left Bury, it made sure we all knew it. 33035 was sat at the rear of that formation but it wasn't this that we were interested in as we'd quickly decided that the 1010 from Bury would be our opening haulage of the day with D1501 offering our first traction and a winner for everything for me. We found suitable droplights to enjoy this opening run from and were definitely not disappointed as 1501 was worked hard as we headed up the gradient and through the tunnel at Summerseat. Any doubts I had about galas were gone within an instant thanks to the glorious noise we got to experience on this run. Mr 403 treated me to a coffee from the on-board buffet (I've since realised I never returned the favour - typical bloody Midlander! Sorry mate) and also threw his gala experience at me with a suggestion that we head to the rear of the set after Ramsbottom in readiness to be right behind the loco on the return journey. A wise move as the rear was empty, well until we both jumped off at Rawtenstall for pics and returned to find a mystery man had appeared at the doorway
D1501 by The_Train

I managed to grab the opposite droplight before we departed Rawtenstall, whilst Mr 403 rolled back the years by hopping up on a table and sticking his head through the front coach window as we headed back down the line. Mr 403's knowledge of the line and a judgement that it would likely be more of a sedate run back to Bury lead us to bail at Ramsbottom, where prior to the 47 departing again I witnessed true affection for these awesome beasts as Mr 403 planted a kiss on the side.....yes I wouldn't believe it either if I hadn't witnessed it :E Our arrival into Ramsbottom coincided with that of 33035 which was working it's way towards Rawtenstall
33035 at Ramsbottom by The_Train

The plan at Rammy was to jump on the shuttle run to Bury which was headed up by a Teddy Bear in the form of D9531. I don't have my records from when I was a youngster but I'd be amazed if I ever got to see one of these little beasts back then so to get behind one was something else
A teddy bear at Ramsbottom by The_Train

I'd been told by Mr 403 that I may be surprised by the teddy and after what seemed like an age as we waited for D1501 to clear the line, I wasn't disappointed as it thrashed it's way to Bury. We knew it would be a quick change at Bury but luckily it was cross platform and we, and many others, hopped off this set and straight onto the next working, which was lead by 20096 and 20132 (in that lovely grey Railfreight livery with the red solebar) and had 56103 sat at the rear. It was well worth the dash at Bury as the choppers did not disappoint in the slightest as they stormed to Rawtenstall
Choppers at Rawtenstall by The_Train

We departed from Rawtenstall with 56103 leading us
DC Rail 56103 by The_Train, on Flickr

and it had a lot to live up to after the efforts of the choppers. It managed to do so and some as me and Mr 403 took seats to discuss our next plans whilst enjoying the noise on offer from just in front of us. It was at this point that we decided we fancied different things with Mr 403 wanting to head back to Bury to join the Warship "Onslaught" and me wanting to intercept 47765 at Ramsbottom. So as we arrived into Rammy I bid the Geordie farewell and headed over the footbridge in readiness for the arrival of my next steed and I have to say it was looking truly superb in the old ScotRail livery
47765 by The_Train

I hopped on 47765 for the run back to Rawtenstall and after a quick pit stop for a sandwich and crisps, I was back aboard for the run to Bury. A fantastic run was soon at an end, yet again, as we arrived into Bury where I was able to spy a couple of locos in the Castlecroft depot which were later identified as D1041 Western Prince and Hymek D7076 (thanks Mr 403). I finally had a bit of festering time at Bury and this gave me the chance to see a bit more of the station. Whilst doing so, I also got to see the arrival of the beastly orange choppers as Harry Needle's 20311 and 20314 arrived into Bury to join the back of 1J63 which was to have 20s at either end
20311 and 20314 at Bury Bolton Street by The_Train

Soon after these were coupled, we were on our way and as we'd already experienced the other 20s earlier in the day I wanted to remain close to 311 and 314 so took up position at the rear droplight as we departed for Rawtenstall. Yet again 20096 and 20132 failed to disappoint as they thrashed their way towards Ramsbottom, where if everything had gone to plan, I would be reunited with my comrade for the day. It certainly looked like everything was going to plan as we arrived into Rammy alongside this
A Warship at Ramsbottom by The_Train

Yes, Warship D832 "Onslaught" was already waiting in the station and although they are not really something I get overly excited about seeing, I have to admit to it being a nice sight. Mr 403 eventually made his way to the rear of the train for the hop to Rawtenstall but his efforts to find food failed him so he was straight to the snack bar at Rawtenstall, so returning with 2 pies. After a few pics it was over to 20311 and 20314 to take us back to Bury
20314 and 20311 by The_Train

A stop start journey, thanks to the local sheep, allowed us to enjoy some fantastic noise as me and Mr 403 took turns at one of the front droplights to enjoy the feast of traction in front of us

The arrival into Bury again left us with a dash, this time across the footbridge to jump aboard the next shuttle to Ramsbottom which was being lead by the fantastic 50015. The service was being held for those of us who'd just arrived behind the 20s so it was boarding at the nearest door only and into a busy first carriage. A walk a little bit further down allowed us both to have a droplight, and for us both to have a breather......not sure either of us will be pushing for a place in Team GB at the next Olympics. Our fitness problems were soon put to one side as the driver spent the next 15 minutes playing up to his grateful audience, none more so than when he notched the power back on the run up to the tunnel at Summerseat and then unleashed all sorts of hellfire as we passed through the tunnel. Unfortunately the video I got in the tunnel didn't do the 50 justice but this one did a little bit more, despite being a couple of carriages from the engine

BR Blue 50015 by The_Train

Ramsbottom came all too quickly but our short layover here did allow us to watch 33035 come and go as it completed its final move of the day
33035 at Ramsbottom by The_Train

It was also time for the final beast of the day and what better way to end such a fantastic day than behind this....
37109 by The_Train

Yes, the ELR had saved us 37109 for the final runs of the day and it was in fine fettle as it growled it's way to Rawtenstall. Here, both me and Mr 403 jumped off and were told that the station buffet was selling pies for a quid and that was enough for us both to visit. After our mad dash at Bury to the 50, we were both eager to pick up a zesty drink but I couldn't resist a meat & potato pie to go with it. It was the most awkward pie purchase of my life as my grabbing the last pie, left a few disappointed behind me, so we made a swift exit before someone threw their platform 5 book at me and, after watching 37109 perform it's run around duties
37109 running round at Rawtenstall by The_Train

found some seats in the 2nd carriage. What a perfect way to end the perfect day, with the chorus of a growling 37 up front, a meat and tater pie in front of me and great company as we spent the journey back to Bury working out what had outdone everything else and with lots to choose from it was a difficult choice. I think, though, that our first traction of the day D1501 was probably the winner for me with the 20s and 50 not far behind. But as is always the case, a great day drew to a close as 37109 took us back to Bolton Street, where everything had certainly wound down for the day. We did get one last photo opportunity though, with locos galore in the station
Locos at Bury by The_Train

And with that it was time to head back to Bury Interchange for the tram back to Manchester. Mr 403 had decided he fancied a bit of time at Piccadilly before he headed to Victoria for his train back to the North East so we awaited the tram back to there. Now here it appears that we have differing opinions with regards to which trams took us back because I've logged 3009 and 3046 which I think differs to what Mr 403 has logged down. Not a major thing for me as tram haulage is hardly top of my to do list. Whatever it was that we were on, we definitely got to see all of the following on the journey back to Piccadilly:
3004, 3020, 3016, 3045, 3013, 3037, 3035, 3033, 3021, 3104, 3029, 3096, 3053, 3059, 3106, 3015, 3022, 3095, 3024 & 3087

Back at Piccadilly we were soon roaming the platforms for any potential winners but they weren't all that forthcoming for me until 158849 and 319375 went into the book in quick succession. I was also able to chalk off 150204 but Mr 403 wasn't having any luck with the units in the train shed so I suggested a wander across to P13/14 as there was a service due that could have been a new 195......It wasn't, it was a 319 :frown: Knowing he needed to get the tram back to Victoria, Mr 403 saw that as a cue to make a move so we had a slow wander towards the concourse and as we did, a 195 crept into P14......bloody typical. Ah well, they will be around for a while yet. We bid a farewell to each other and as Mr 403 headed for the trams, I went back into the train shed to see what else I could snare. The answer was not a great deal for 20 minutes or so until 142044 seemed to open the floodgates a little bit as quickly after chalking this off I spied 350401 heading into P14 with an Anglo-Scotch TPE service and while I was over that end, I also bagged TfW 158830. A double whammy of 150s proved to be my final winners of the day in Manchester as 150276 and 150120 were marked off as well. After all of the winning haulage I'd had today, it was a shame that my final steed was dud Pendolino 390010 but I was at least able to grab a table seat on a busy service which allowed me to add a bit of charge to my phone. It was mainly a case of reading or listening to music for the journey home which took us through P1 at Crewe which was a new one for me and more importantly took us past 92006 and 92033 which were sat in the Holding Sidings. Dud 66951 passed through Stafford after I'd alighted the Pendolino but that was it for what had probably been my favourite day out since getting back into the hobby last year.

Thanks have to go to @47403 for suggesting this outing and then offering fantastic company. There was certainly plenty of laughs along the way, to go with the awesome traction on offer.

This website will give you an Excel Spreadsheet which lists the distances between tram stops on the Metro Link,
https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/metrolink_station_distances
If you are OK with spreadsheets you can add the distances up for your trips on the Metrolink,
To convert your total metres to miles use this website

Damn, your making me jealous! Looks and sounds like you had a great day. Summerseat tunnel is ace for hellfire! Its the only place I have witnessed it behind a 37/9! Have you been on any railtours yet? My last one was top and tailed 37's to Blackpool South amongst other places.

Nice to see you on my doorstep sir! The ELR gala looked superb, done it a couple of times myself and it's a great day out. What did you make of the ELR as a whole?

I've just seen 56091, 56103, 20096, 20132, 20311 and 20314 heading through my local on the way back to Barrow Hill, them 20s really are beautiful beasts.

A little tale regarding D1501 / 47402...

When it was named 'Gateshead' the naming ceremony was held inside the shed at Gateshead depot. The public were able to attend, and after the ceremony we were able to freely wander around the shed. Several 46s had just been reinstated from store at Swindon Works, so it was surprising to see a couple of locos that we thought had an appointment with the cutter's torch.

I even appeared on the local news that evening!

I'd set myself a target of a gala and a railtour for this year but not done a railtour so far. There is one that @Kite159 had pointed me towards which runs from Crewe to Portsmouth with 3x 37s which I was really keen to do but the money I'd hoped to get which would have paid for it as not yet materialised and doesn't look like it will in time for me to go on that one. I will definitely do one at some point though

It was my first visit to a heritage line and my first gala so I have nothing to compare it to. The gala, though, was superbly run and offered plenty of variation in terms of traction. All of the staff are great as well and more than happy to have a chat with you about the line. There was also the opportunity to go on a depot tour but we decided that would mean we couldn't ride behind everything we wanted to.....probably something to do if you're there for a couple of days.

As for the ELR itself, again I have nothing to compare to and wouldn't have a clue where it lies compared to other heritage lines but it's a nice line with lots of great views. There is also plenty available to you at Bolton Street in terms of refreshments and I love the converted coach at Rawtenstall.

Just out of interest how does it compare to other lines in terms of the mileage it offers?

That's unreal and shows how different things were back in the day. I wonder if @47403 was there, as I'm sure Gateshead shed was his 2nd home back then?

Another excellent read, as always, good sir! Those video clips were also appreciated as I had forgotten (shockingly!) what those locos actually sound like. It's been way too long since I last sampled any of those classes after all!

Thanks Tech. Glad you enjoyed the videos, don't think my phone camera did the locos too much justice to be fair but it's always a nice reminder of what these beasts can offer. Just a shame that most are restricted to heritage duties these days

It certainly was Iskra. I'd recommend the ELR to anyone, and in particular any diesel gala they host

I agree, I’ve visited in the last couple of years and it is exceptional. I had a class 50, City of Wells and an LMS Crab all on one day. It stands out from many preserved railways as it serves decent sized towns so there is something to do/amenities near the stations, whereas many preserved railways have very little near their stations. I also like the urban/rural contrast that it has going on and the easy car access to Heywood.

Couldn't agree more. I use it to get to Ramsbottom for the annual chocolate festival (which I heartily recommend for those with a sweet tooth!) and the ease if access make it so much more relaxing than driving. Even the wife, who has no interest in trains, thinks it's wonderful.

That's unreal and shows how different things were back in the day. I wonder if @47403 was there, as I'm sure Gateshead shed was his 2nd home back then?

Sadly I wasnt there, certainly wished I was but I do remember seeing immaculate locos, with the fresh paint smell and names on the side, thinking we'd got an OC or SF based 47 coming towards us, only to see the coat of arms above the numbers. Didnt stay like that for long mind.

Great write up by the way there Mr Train. Thanks for the kind words too. I've racked my brain to which loco, i thought was the best for haulage on the day and I still can't decide. D1501's was an absolute storming run but I could be accused of being slightly biased, in fairness though I could quite easily make a case for all them, so I'm gonna sit on the fence and say, they all contributed to what was a brilliant day.

Great video footage there too. I have only one very small regret and that was not getting the chance to ride behind D5054 but it just gives me an excuse to go to next years to get it.

As regards the ELR, it's a great line and I personally love it, I ain't been to a great deal on the gala front myself, the SVR is a great line too, I think when it comes to Diesel Gala's, I think the SVR is top of the tree. Though it's been bloody ages since Ive ridden on it, the NYMR takes some beating for scenery too but I'm sure everyone could make a case for a different one. In my opinion, when it comes to Preserved lines, no-one does it better than the UK really.

Mr Train
I have taken the liberty of reposting two of your photos with acknowledgement on the WMTrains Livery and Station Rebranding thread at Page 60 Post 1791
They are the Class 150 at Piccadilly in LM livery and the unbranded 350 at Stafford from your posts on this thread at 1334 and 1354

Mr Train, if you are going to do a railtour then the first thing to do is decide what you want to get out of it. Is it big noisy locos on the front, a scenic route, an interesting destination or the chance to yellow-pen some sidings and loops. This should then help you to narrow down your choice of tour.

I follow up on what xotGD has said. I have not been on many railtours as I like to do my own planning and visit places I want to see. Railtours are expensive so you need to decide what you want.

If it is particular traction then this information is usually in the advert. However you do not normally get to chose your carriage and seat so you might not be near the loco. As you will know, spotting locos/units as you pass through a new to you area is very much a hit and miss activity.

If it is particular lines for example freight lines not usually travelled by scheduled passenger trains then this is a great incentive and these will be spelled out in the adverts but not always in full detail.

My last railtour ended up by running on what is known as Rail Tour Time, i.e. we dropped back an hour so that we could take the same path an hour later. This resulted in an early termination of the outward run for which I have a credit against my next tour in September.

The Branch Line Society tour, that will more than likely take in rare track, sidings and good loops. Shame you can't go, it will be a good day out.

The one I did, I did specifically for 37's to Blackpool South. I did 47's to Blackpool North when cross country used to go there in the late nineties.
