Hi,

My wife and I need to get from central London to Stansted Airport on Thursday leaving around 18:00 and we will be returning on Sunday around the same time but to Woolwich Arsenal. What is the cheapest way for us to do this journey? We work near Moorgate and Tower Hill so were originally intending to meet at Liverpool Street and get the Stansted Express but from reading previous threads on this forum that's unlikely to be the cheapest way. We don't have travelcards but we do have a Two Together railcard.

Some of my own thoughts based on other threads...we will have used contactless to travel from Woolwich Arsenal to work (zone 4 to zone 1) on Thursday and will be doing the reverse on Sunday (assuming we return to Liverpool Street) - can we purchase a ticket to the zone 4 boundary to/from Stansted to avoid paying twice for this?

Thanks for your help!

What time is your flight - i.e. when do you need to be at the airport by - on the Thursday? This may affect whether you're eligible to use certain kinds of discounted fares.

Ridiculous that the WebDuo is marketed as a special offer, when it is nothing but a pair of undiscounted Anytime returns!

To address the question about BZ4, that would only apply if you held a travel card covering zones 1-4. Having travelled from zone 4 using contactless doesn’t help you.

Have you looked at Stansted Express WebDuo.
https://www.stanstedexpress.com/tickets-fares/ticket-types/webduo/

Even better, Anytime return with 2 Together card, £39.50

I hadn't seen that, thanks! Looks like this might be our best option unless someone finds something creative.

It's at 20:55. We will need time to sample the delights of Stansted's food offerings before the flight!

Ah, of course, thanks for clarifying that.

The money you'll pay airside at Stansted (even at Wetherspoons) will make the cost of the train tickets seem pretty insignificant!!

NationalExpress coach A9 runs frequently from Stratford fast to Stansted, and is close enough to the M11 to be less susceptible to delay than a coach from central London. Booked in advance, three of us travelled for less than £30 return, which was vastly cheaper (and, given we were starting from Greenwich, faster) than rail even though we all had railcards. And although we had specific-service tickets, we were allowed to travel on the first coach (one service earlier than booked) in each direction.

I would not use the coach to the airport - 1800 on a weekday means dreadful traffic congestion the M11. Expensive as the Stansted Express is, on most days it'll beat the coach hands down for journey time.
Totally different story for the return, I'd take the coach to Stratford (about 45 minutes) then the DLR to Woolwich.
Coach to Stratford is £12 walk up fare, the DLR is only £1.50

THe DLR is only £1.00 if you have your railcard linked to your Oyster Card...
