We definitely need a French-style notice on the blinds stating the default position in the event of a disagreement.
I think it would be best if the blinds were removed altogether and we manage in standard class as we do now with mark 3s and 4s. You will get people with laptops wanting the blinds down so they can see the screen better, to the detriment of passengers who want to look out of the window and enjoy the scenery.

Does anyone have any more info on this from Tuesday 9th?

Was 100% an Azuma as I saw it on Platform 4. I also went into the First Class Lounge and was asked whether I was here for the Azuma (I was actually waiting for the Aberdeen service). Was this a passenger service? or invited guests possibly? Just not sure what this was.

I think that they probably would be better off with curtains, but we can only dream of such...
Out of interest, what is the default position in France and how is the sign worded?
It would be great if they could combine a sign for this with one saying 'Use headphones when listening to electronic devices' to deal with the morons who are rude enough to think the whole carriage wants to hear it.

It was a staff rehearsal train, carrying staff and friends as passengers.

It was Newcastle crews first time working on an Azuma, in readiness for August 1st launch in to entry through Newcastle.

Three quick questions:
  • After reading some stuff in the 'Everything's grim up North' thread about pantograph arcing and distracting drivers, why do drivers use the front pantograph? Is it regulation or choice? Is it simply because it's easier to check it's up?
  • I noticed yesterday that some carriages have different wheels (like the difference between class 221 and 220 wheels). Are these the unpowered bogies? Does it make any difference?
  • Aside from numbers, how can you tell which carriages have under-mounted engines?
Thanks

Thank you 3973EXL for details of 5Q83 yesterday Willesden to Doncaster.
However there was also a 5Q83 via the Joint Line on Monday passing Spalding at 12:44 - would anyone have the numbers of this particular unit, please ?

Your surmise is partially correct: On bi-mode units, inside frame bogies are fitted to the unpowered intermediate vehicles on 9-car sets, while the powered vehicles and the unpowered driving cars all have outside frame bogies. I'm unsure what other identifying detail differences there are, but the driving cars on all sets are unpowered, and so are vehicles 4 and 6 on a 9-car set - distinguishable by their inside frame bogies. All other vehicles on bi-mode sets are fitted with engines.

On an 801, do all vehicles, apart from the driving vehicles and the one fitted with a genset, have inside frame bogies?

Is there any noticeable difference in ride quality between the bogie types?

I thought the bogie arrangement was the same as the 800? The reason for not using inside frame bogies is the presence of traction motors (which are of course still there on an 801) not the genset. Further, the 801s are designed such that they can easily turn back into 800s if the DfT so desires. If you had to change bogies around that would not be a quick job.

I'm not sure the lack of blinds/curtains in standard on Mk3s and 4s was a conscious decision to avoid arguments between passengers, surely it was to save money!

800109 arrived at Waverley, pan up, from Heaton around 0930, and has just departed for Newcastle, also on the juice.

I know this isn't for diagrams so feel free to delete, but i thought I'd put this on here aswell for anyone who doesn't know about the 800/801 LNER diagram thread:

From August, these trains should, assuming no other problems, run as Azumas:

Mon to Fri:
- 1E01 05:40 Edinburgh to Kings Cross (calls at Newcastle and Kings Cross only)
- 1S27 17:30 Kings Cross to Edinburgh

Sat:
- 1E04 06:55 Edinburgh to Kings Cross
- 1S17 12:30 Kings Cross to Edinburgh

Sun:
- 1E08 09:00 Edinburgh to Kings Cross
- 1S21 14:30 Kings Cross to Edinburgh

Sorry but I've lost track here.
Are LNER using.
a. Full electrics.
b. Bi modes but electric mode throughout.
c. Bi modes on diesel north of York.
Thanks

No Full Electrics (i.e. 801's) just yet. 800's have been seen leaving Newcastle with Pan Up - the Bi-Modes should be operating on electric now, where OHLE is available.

How far off is 10-801/1 operation on Leeds services now?

You may well be correct but it still serves to avoid occasional disputes between passengers.

I saw what appeared to be some 5-car 801s standing at Tyne Yard earlier in the week (I saw the 801 part of the number out of the window, I was travelling on another train at the time so I only had a few seconds of view); was that the 5-car 801s (801/1s)?

I'm sure I saw one pan-up as well at Newcastle, but as I was waiting to board a train I wasn't in much of a position to take a photo or get whether it was an 800 or 801. Also they will need to have some 801s running somewhere in order to have enough combined 800 and 801 units to reach Newcastle, let alone Scotland. Also there will surely be know-how from the GWR 800s and 802s, which can be used to iron out issues at the manufacturing stage.
