Hello got my information for a trip to Isle of Man on the 20th July 2019. I am travelling from Cleethorpes to Stockport (going to Manchester Airport) then this is where I am confused. I get there at a round 9:43 and get on the 10:38 Virgin Trains Service to Glasgow a Central but get off at Lancaster for the Heysham Service. I wasn’t aware of such a Service from London to Glasgow Via Manchester?

Due to engineering works there are diversions which results in this unusual pattern being operated.

A flexible ticket will let you do London-Manchester-Glasgow any time.
Just not on Virgin all the way (they don't normally operate Manchester-Preston).

Always thought that VT should operate this now its wired , more capacity. I think the problem is diagramming of units .

No paths, the diversions only work as TfW arent running and the Leeds Chester is curtailed.

Theoretically it'd have quite a few advantages - extend one of the London to Manchester services each hour, ideally the via Stoke. More capacity between Manchester and Scotland, new direct services from Milton Keynes and Stoke to the north WCML

Plus Bolton would have a new direct London service.

The biggest obstacle might be handling the passenger volumes at Piccadilly platforms 13/14.

Its set down northbound and pickup southbound to limit problems but there will be poor punctuality. Its a complete non starter for a regular train service unless platforms 15 and 16 are built. Rolling stock for more than a token daily service won't be available until 2026.

Given it is set down only northbound would a Manchester/Lancaster ticket be valid on that service? Will be interested to see how they enforce that at rush hour with the usual chaos on Platform 14.

The problem will be that these trains are timed to arrive at P14 at xx50, three mins after the scheduled departure of the NT service to Barrow/Windermere. If the latter is cancelled or late (quite likely given the 8-minute turnaround at the Airport) it is difficult to see how passengers for Wigan, Preston or Lancaster can be prevented from boarding the Glasgow. In any case, this will be a problem at 1650, when the Barrow goes via Bolton and there is a gap in service from Picc to Wigan between 1618 and 1718. What Wigan commuter would not chance their arm on the 1650 Glasgow ?

No I don't think so. They are only stopping at Piccadilly to avoid reducing its London services from 3tph to 2tph. I agree it will be chaos which is why there is no chance of any through services to London without platforms 15 and 16 and even then there would only be enough rolling stock for a token service.

If you wanted Lancaster-Manchester then you could always alight at stockport and head back into the city I guess?

Heading southbound you could get a ticket to Stockport but jump off at Piccadilly. I doubt anyone would try to stop you. Its a quirk of the temporary timetable that Stockport will have a direct service to Scotland and the tickets will be valid for the direct service.

You could get a ticket from the North to as far as Wigan NW then onwards from there buy the cheap Manchester Day Ranger ticket which is valid between wigan and stockport.
