I saw what appeared to be some 5-car 801s standing at Tyne Yard earlier in the week (I saw the 801 part of the number out of the window, I was travelling on another train at the time so I only had a few seconds of view); was that the 5-car 801s (801/1s)?

I'm sure I saw one pan-up as well at Newcastle, but as I was waiting to board a train I wasn't in much of a position to take a photo or get whether it was an 800 or 801. Also they will need to have some 801s running somewhere in order to have enough combined 800 and 801 units to reach Newcastle, let alone Scotland. Also there will surely be know-how from the GWR 800s and 802s, which can be used to iron out issues at the manufacturing stage.

There is 4 sets of 5 car 801s stored at Tyne yard at the moment.

I believe they are still testing 5/10 cars joining and splitting, to get the passenger information and reservations systems working correctly, something which I believe still causes massive issues on Gwr.

For Info 801103,104,105,106,108 and 109 are at Tyne Yard.

Curious that the 1715 Leeds-Kings Cross was an HST today- it's been an Azuma for a couple of months now.

sorry if this has been asked before?.

would anyone know what the plans are (if there’s any) in terms of the LNER ‘Azuma’s being introduced on the ‘Highland Cheiftain’ services from London Kings Cross to Inverness?.

There was only five units available for six diagrams so there were sets swapped around from the hst and mk4 fleet to see everything run.

Had my first trip on the Azuma last night from Leeds to Donny 18:15 off Leeds.
The two stand out features has to be the impressive legroom and the ride quality- a step up from Mk3 and Mk4.

There’s two aspects to this question - yes there must be plans, because there’ll be no HSTs to run the service in the foreseeable future. But when? I’d seriously expect by the end of the year, as they are gradually spreading 800s northwards, with Edinburgh getting one service each way by August 1st.

But there’s a separate thread about actual service patterns and dates, which can be found here:

Some people have some very strange ideas as to what good ride quality is.

And the perceived ride quality also depends whether you are sitting directly over the wheelset or not.
As I have previously posted, in the space of a week I travelled on HST, Mark 4 and IEP over the same route and in the same place in each vehicle (at one end). I wasn’t surprised the Mark 3 came out the best, but was astonished at how poor IEP was - significantly (by a large degree) worse than a Mark 4. I was genuinely appalled at how bad it was.

That's interesting, as my observation is that Mk3 is best of the three (though with the characteristic sway), 80x in the middle (OK but a bit rough, very Desiro-like) and Mk4 utterly terrible. I mostly don't sit right at the end of 80x, though, as the seats with no window and no centre armrest and the priority seats (which I don't need on 80x due to the excellent general legroom) are there.

Some people have some very strange ideas as to what good ride quality is.

Ride quality is a qualitative measure meaning its subjective (unless I'm mistaken). Even if there's a strong common opinion in regards to it, doesn't mean someone won't disagree.

I believe the majority of people won't notice ride quality, you won't be able to talk to many people about the difference in ride quality between a Desiro and an electrostar even though many on this forum may have views about it.

I have used GWRs IETs both in the centre and end of cars and I didn't find it noticeable rough, and I'm sure the majority of users would have the opinion "this is a train and it's moving like a normal train does" unless the quality was bad enough for it to feel as though it would derail.

That opinion isn't weird, it's different to yours. Same applies to people's comments about finding the seats comfortable.

Would it also differ between the cars with inside frame bogies and outside frame bogies? Although, having said that, I can't say I've noticed a difference between 220s and 221s.

When I first had an 800 it was a GWR version, and my view was it was on a par with a Mark 4. Having tried them on the same ECML track, I was shocked at how bad it was - hunting throughout the journey.

I don't think 80x ride roughly. You do hear the odd clunk and bang and feel and accompanying jolt you're over the bogies. But in general they are quiet and smooth.

But then I've never thought a Mk4 to be particularly rough.

I like the 80x trains. Nice and light and airy, lots of legroom, quiet even on diesel. The only things I dislike about them are the window blinds and those things you sit on which we've spoken about too much.

I don't honestly remember the Mk4s riding that badly but it's been a while since I've ridden one. The biggest thing I noticed (primarily as I used to travel the ECML with an extra-large suitcase that poked out the luggage rack) was the lateral Gs pulled round some of the curves at 125mph. The Mk3s seemed a lot bouncier by comparison.

I had my first Azuma trips last week.
I noticed nothing about the ride quality - likely meaning I wasn't subject to any odd forces.

The biggest thing I noticed was the lack of a loud thump on passing an oncoming train at speed.
The second was that the lumbar support in the seat was great, and the seat back was pretty upright. Lots of legroom too. And the seat base... Well, I survived London-Leeds on it, but I'm not convinced I could manage London-Edinburgh.

Ride quality I find on them is fairly decent. Very good I find sub 100mph and give a smooth ride on the Cotswolds or down to Bristol Temple Meads via Bath. When running at 125 on the mainline I find the ride becomes more unsettled over the pointwork and junctions. Reminds me of a 170 in many respects. Does not seem to make much difference sitting in a carriage with the motorised bogies or inside frame ones. Having been on MK4s the ride on them is unsettling and MK3s do 'bounce' around and laterally feel off at times.

The Voyagers have their pitfalls of course but ride quality on them, particularly the 221s I find is impressive.

No news on 800101's whereabouts since it returned from Eastleigh at the end of May. Anyone know where it is?

800101 is locked away at Doncaster Depot........August 1st Launch for Flying Scotsman.......rumours of a special livery.

With the introduction on Edinburgh services from the 1st August, will the sets be able to operate on electric right into Edinburgh or are there still issues with this?

On the tpe timetable thread it is quoted that that 802s will change to diesel going north at chathill.

So I assume an azuma per hour will take the juice with the other services all on diesel.

So the other LNER service per hour will likely also switch modes at Chathill then?
