Just seen on Twitter that Longton Station was closed earlier today by a swarm of wasps, I don't think I have seen that as a reason to close a station before but I am sure East Midlands Trains did it for safety reasons that were justified.

#EMTUpdate For safety reasons we are currently unable to stop our trains at Longton in the Uttoxeter/Derby direction because of a swarm of wasps. Customers from Longton travelling towards Uttoxeter/Derby should travel to Stoke on Trent and change for alternative services.

#EMTUpdate Our trains are now able stop at Longton again between Stoke on Trent & Uttoxeter. Staff have reopened the platform after carrying out an assessment.

Services are now calling for those affected.

Almost two4one as Nottingham Platform 1 was closed to traffic due to a similar problem with bees.

Reminds me that I finished eating a pasta salad earlier on that platform at Shrewsbury, put the packaging on the bench next to me, and when I went to get up and chuck it, I found a good few wasps inside.

I don't condone littering but needless to say I didn't fancy picking up the packaging

This suggest that LM were still calling. Perhaps their green livery is less attractive to wasps.

EMT's bright colours might be more like a pretty, nectar-laden flower! :)

Back in the late 90's I was with a group of Bradford City supporters travelling down the M6 to watch us play at West Bromwich. At a service station on the way, one supporter dutifully put his waste into a bin in the car park only to be greeted by a swarm of wasps that were in said bin. Lots of running around followed, not helped by the fact that our kit that year were bright claret & amber stripes!! We managed to all get back onto the bus although the poor chap had been stung a few times, and as the driver pulled out there was the almost surreal sight of this swarm of wasps chasing our coach (a Wallace Arnold one so also a wasp attracting colour!).

Longton doesn't get LNR services - it is the nearby Longport that could (yes, it is confusing!)
OK, scrub that then... IIRC the EMT services pass each other at Stoke so getting one the other way from Longton would be a frantic dash through the subway there. Anyone who arrived for a particular train towards Derby could be stung for a two-hour delay.
