TfW will surely have to agree any slippage. Assuming they have a signed contract with Porterbrook with an agreed lease date, then that is contractually binding and they could say no to any GA extension.

But the DfT could force Porterbrooks hand to keep them at GA, could it not?

yes, special design for them. Not that in normal service Thameslink trains go north of Cambridge North; the markers go all the way up the Kings Lynn line though I think? Similarly, the Class 745s will not normally go north of Stansted on the West Anglia, but good to see that they're putting stop boards and presumably intend to test and get clearance all the way just in case.

There certainly were a few services worked by 700s as far as Ely although I've not seen one there since January. Not aware of any making it further north than that and no markers for them beyond Ely on the King's Lynn line.

Thought this photo from the Eastern Daily Press of the new trains stored on the Mid Norfolk Railway may be of interestFlirt.jpg

DfT surely cannot force anyone to break a contract. The agreement really needs to be with TfW, which might well put the cat among the pigeons as that isn't DfT controlled. For Porterbrook it doesn't much matter - normal practice assuming TfW agree would be for the lease to be with TfW but units sub-leased back to GA.

Does anyone know the formation of the 12-car versions of the FLIRT?

I've been able to find the formation of the Class 755 units on Wikipedia:
A 3-car is formed of: DMS(A)-PP-PTSW-DMS(B)
A 4-car is formed of: DMS(A)-PTS-PP-PTSW-DMS(B)

Lease end is 31st October. Full stop. If the new trains aren't in by then, tough. Think Overground 172s. I can 100% say there is no wiggle room.

but before when 745 002-4 arrived, they went straight into MNR Sidings, why now does 104 head there for 005's arrival?

although the delivery of 745005 didn’t happen, if they kept 104 at NCP, there wouldn’t be room for 005 with all the current rolling stock still about, NCP is limited for space right at the moment.

I think that an Intercity 745 has the following formation:
DMS-PTS-TS-TS-TS-MS(A)-MS(B)-TS-TS-TSWB-PTF-DMF

The Airport version is the same, albeit without the first class and the buffet sections.

I think the original idea was that was so that the non-PRM 317s could be ditched first. What happens when is presumably all up in the air with the considerable delay to the 720 deployment.
At the moment that's all of them! The 317/6 appear to be hitlisted. They haven't had an overhaul for years. 317663 and 669 have already gone. Assuming the 745s start running to Stansted later this year that will free up some 379s which will replace some 317s.

Regarding the photo above, I take it these are the long distance EMUs? Why does the third carriage have its door further down the carriage than the others? I looks like it's been put in backwards!

That car has the buffet counter so that might have something to do with it?

This thread is to discuss Abellio Greater Anglia new Stadler Flirt trains. If anyone wishes to discuss anything else, please create a new thread in the appropriate area (if there isn't a thread already) or use an existing thread (if there is).

If someone else goes off topic, and you wish to reply to it, please create a new thread in the right section. Then report the first off topic post and provide the details.

Thanks! :) I have moved some more posts into there. Please can everyone try do this when going off on a tangent ;) The sooner this is done, the fewer posts we have to split off (in some cases it becomes impracticable to split the thread)

Anyway, back to Abellio Greater Anglia new Stadler Flirt trains....

So despite the ORR go ahead, the roll-out seems to be delayed. I notice the mention of 'too many faults' being to blame. Do we know what these faults are? There was a mention of engines shutting down and being unable to restart?

Wasn't the ORR thing permission to use the trains subject to mileage accumulation and fault free running?
In other words, more of a design/construction/technical standard review and approval that the trains comply with all the regulations. They still need to complete fault free running, mileage accumulation and train the people who are going to operate them.
I'm sure it's a lot more complex than getting a letter from the ORR one day and putting them into service the next.

No doubt, but it is over a month since they were approved and seems use in service is not imminent. As weeks turn to months speculation that there are real problems still to sort out is inevitable.

I think that's a completely normal timescale for new rolling stock. I haven't read anything that suggests a major issue with the Stadler fleet.
Clearly it's going to be a while with much of the delivered fleet currently in storage. I guess the focus is on getting the initial fault free running required on one example of each type, and then commence mileage accumulation on the rest.
There's probably little point trying to do those two things concurrently, even if the resources to do it existed. For example, if a software issue is found with the initial units then the fix would need to be applied to them all.
It makes more sense to shake out any common issues on as few units as possible, apply the fixes across the fleet and then test individual units to find their individual faults.
Any other approach would result in chaos.

And there's still all of the drivers, guards, catering and platform staff to train.

It all takes time and can't be done overnight.

Heard two different stories today, the short set will continue to operate until October, then heard it finishes this friday as new train enters service on Monday

Probably be somewhere in the middle. While I don't think you'll be riding on a FLIRT by Monday I think it'll be out of daily service, if not totally gone, before October

Disappointed we're not allowed to discuss the flirt catering features here :(

No, were not allowed to talk about coffee (rightly). Discussion of the catering features themselves (rather than the actual food and drink offered) would seem within the scope of the thread.
