Which will free up a lot of the 3-car units.

Will these spare 3 car units end up being used to increase capacity on other routes into Edinburgh in time for the festival or will they be used to allow more 314s to be withdrawn?

8x 3-car units will be released from the E&G. These ought to be able to strengthen some services and displace a couple of 314s.

Platform 7 at Queen St can already handle 8 car sets and has done (2 x single 4 car) several times since the last timetable change.

I know some standard class only services are operated by 4-car sets at present so I'd guess they'd swap those over and the remaining sets will be to replace the 314s.

The majority of services on the Glasgow-Cumbernauld-Edinburgh route currently run 4-car units just now; will this change now that an extra 8 4-car sets are needed to on the Falkirk High service?

Also, incredible to think that only 25 years ago Edinburgh and Glasgow were only served by a half hourly 4 (sometimes 2) car service from Queen Street and an hourly (?) service from Central. We're about to be riding on extremely fast, 184m long, 8-car electric services running every 15 minutes. Remarkable to see how far we've come in such a relatively short period of time (issues with train crew shortages, signal failures and rolling stock reliability aside!).

Yes, all the 4-car are needed for the Edinburgh-Glasgow via Falkirk High service, so all current 4-car wirkings outside that will go over to 3-car.

It will be interesting to see if the new park and ride at Robroyston will see a sudden uplift in passengers on this route. 3 cars are fine presently but i wonder if it will become insufficient quickly.

Hopefully it won't, but it's a distinct possibility, presently the route is fairly quiet but if people feel it's preferable to take the train, well then...

Now if only they can get back to 1970s timings we'll be laughing 8-)

Hmmmm yes presently it should be ok, although only just. Can't help but seeing passengers from Linlithgow getting stiffed again in the long term as ridership increases!

Anyway, not wanting to stray off topic, can't wait to see the first 8-car sets up and running at the end of the month! Great timing too, just before Edinburgh Fringe.

My so bad with 5/6-car Mk3 sets, but with 2-car 158s - not good!

The line has definitely seen some decent improvements, with new electric trains but I think before long they'll need that 6tph frequency which would probably need 385s taken from other routes.

I thought they'd likely want to keep the E&G 385, but they might order new EMUs for future electrifications which would allow perhaps the 318/320s to be withdrawn, the 385s to be cascaded off Inverclyde/Cathcart and those 385s to go to the E&G and to strengthen other services in the Central Belt.

I thought Scotrail had an option for further 385 orders?

Quite possibly, but it might be too late to exercise it now.

When the E&G is fully 8 car operated it will require 16 4 car units with say 1 or 2 as a spare set, this will leave 6 or 7 units for other routes. Would it be worth ScotRail's while using these from Central on the Shotts line & introducing a First Class option on that line so that both Glasgow stations have Edinburgh services with First Class facilities. This would also help some of the peak services that reduced from 4 car dmu's to 3 car emu's in May

Robroyston will surely be more Glasgow bound? Would have thought most Edinburgh bound traffic would head a couple of junctions up the M80 to Croy

Anyone know why it's only scheduled for ,45mph? These paths used to be 75mph.
