Loads of short-running at the northern end of Services 1, 2, 3, 4 & 76 in Bristol this afternoon and this evening due to a large fire in a hotel which has closed the A4018 between the junction of Wyck Beck Road and Station Road (Henbury) and Lysander Road. Noted this evening at Blackboy Hill Top between 7:30pm and 7:50pm:

- Enviro400 MMC 33961 to Henbury (Tormarton Crescent) on Service 1
- Enviro400 MMC 33972 to Southmead (Arnside Road) on Service 2
- B7TL / Wright Gemini 32331 to Henbury (Tormarton Crescent) on Service 3
- ALX400 32289 showing to Henbury (Crow Lane) on Service 4

First's website, however, says that the 2 is going to Henbury (Crow Lane) and the 4 to Wyck Beck Road which would be the stop after Crow Lane on that route. Service 76 is normal route to Southmead (Arnside Road) and then diverting via. Filton. First time I think I have seen Enviro400 MMCs signed for short running at the northern end. Thankfully no injuries have been caused by the fire. Service 76 will not run between Henbury and Cribbs Causeway tonight and no info yet as to the state of play when service resumes tomorrow morning.

The 2 was indeed terminating at crow lane but does not have “Henbury” on its destination board so it had to be Southmead instead.

Now that is interesting given that they took the Severn Express (as the X14) solely from Stagecoach and the X5 is even more surprising as it’s part of the Excel network and takes Stagecoach into areas they’ve not previously served.

Be very intrigued to hear what the full story is.

Stagecoach seem to be steadily increasing their presence in that area. As you say, interesting to find out how this has come about.

They’re not making money. I had previously heard that CT Plus we’re going to be taking on two commercial routes - I guess that’s not worked out?

The 7XP I can understand as lifting the bridge tolls will have hurt that but the X5 is the real surprise. Stagecoach really establishing a bridgehead - where will it end?

First has stated that these services are no longer profitable and that they are now preparing themselves for a possible sale given what I’ve read on a Facebook forum

One day these new fangled 'LED' things I keep on hearing about will replace the bus destination linens and they'll be able to show all destinations!

Wonder if they are looking at what services are considered to be non profitable and then possibly getting rid of them and just keeping the more profitable services before a sell of or a de merger occurs

A brave and ambitious idea, perhaps, but I wondered how advantageous it would be to extend into Cardiff (maybe some journeys). If the idea is to attract more daytrippers from Bristol, then, I would personally view Cardiff as the more desirable destination rather than Newport.

(Note that I've not been on 7XP beyond Cribbs so I'm unsure how well it does)

This is very interesting news that Stagecoach is expanding back into Chepstow again since they withdrawn all services from there in back in 2014!

Wonder what is the PVR of what Stagecoach is taking over?

The X5 is four vehicles and the 7XP is two (though off peak, three are used). Extending the 7XP to Cardiff would demand more resources obviously. Obviously, Stagecoach Cymru moved out of Chepstow (initially closing the depot and then pulling out fully) whilst this is Stagecoach West moving in.

Why are the 2's showing Southmead Arnside Road on the destination displays when in fact they are currently terminating at Henbury? If they can't put Henbury on the destination display, then why not? Also I was on a 2 yesterday morning that surprisingly had Cribbs Causeway on the destination display, when in fact as expected it terminated at Henbury.

They haven't fitted the correct linens to the buses yet!
