Metal pay checks can be an interesting and (largely) inexpensive railway collectable that exist in large numbers, dating from the pre-grouping era until well into BR days.

I have tried to find out when they were last used by BR but no-one seems to know. Does anyone remember then and when they were last used?

Used for many purposes but coal miners had at least two, one would be kept with them and the other would be handed in before they went down the shaft. It’s so they always knew who was underground and it also logged the fact that you were working so you got paid.

A similar system is in use in shipbuilding & ship repair to control access to confined spaces today - each person authorised in the space is issued a tally, on entering the space the tally is placed on a hook board adjacent to the entrance together with a copy of the permit. There's therefore a record in the permit office of who should be in a space, and at the entrance of who is actually in the space.

Related to the pay thing, in places like railway works employees were paid in cash that was handed out in a tin, the number of which matched the employee's tag number, hence the term 'pay check'.

Most coal mining pit checks are non ferrous to reduce the risk of sparks and explosions.
