Have any of the commuter TOCs started cutting the number of coaches provided on Fridays, in response to fewer people going to work on that day?

No - because I suspect it would be more trouble than it is worth. It is noticeably quieter into London on a Friday. The benefits of flexible working!

Not that I have noticed, at least on my commute. I do notice less people at my workplace though on a Friday!

They need to lengthen the trains on Fridays starting at around 3/4pm. I usually get a 4pm train and it is far busier on a Friday than Monday-Thursday.

It always used to be busier on Fridays, being the end of the working week with many people travelling away for the weekend, and that seems to me to still be the case to an extent so I would sincerely hope not.

it is certainly not as busy INTO London on a Friday morning as on other days of the week.

It depends on the nature of the route. Some people will be making long-distance journeys on Friday afternoons to go away for the weekend on the same trains that commuters would usually travel homewards on. For example people going from London to the Kent Coast at 1600 on Friday will probably be sharing the same trains many annual season ticket holders use to get home from the office, same for people going to the West Midlands for the weekend sharing trains with Leighton Buzzard daily commuters, attracted by the value for money tickets. etc etc.

Early Friday morning is almost universally quieter than Monday - Thursday mornings, for both long-distance and daily commuter traffic.

Quieter mornings undoubtedly but probably not enough to shorten commuter trains from 10 to 5 car, or 12 to 8. But then you’d have the hassle of re-joining them for the afternoon peak, which presumably starts earlier on a Friday anyway.

No, because it would require a change to the franchise agreement, and the DfT would be unlikely to want to risk the headlines given the marginal saving available.

I believe some SWR West of England services have more coaches on a Friday, rather than fewer.

I think (but not absolutely sure) they’ve generally been strengthened to the Friday lengths all week since last December. But that definitely was the case before then.

For Intercity operators it's good news. Too many long distance passengers as it is Friday afternoon/evening so a few less commuters going home is most welcome.

I think one is still longer in the evening. Certainly West of England is very busy mornings eastbound on Mon-Wed and very dead the other two days (table to myself sometimes to Woking and usually to Basingstoke on the 0510 from Exeter). Westbound they are dead off peak Mon-Wed but busy from 12 on Thu and packed on Fri IME.

The 1720 Waterloo-Exeter is booked 8-car out of Waterloo all week, but is 3-car beyond Salisbury Mon-Thu but 6-car from Salisbury on Fridays. Is that the one you’re thinking of?

There used to be fine tuning for this - an empty HST off Laira maintenance to Paddington , Friday only, to form an additional (higher earning) , Paddington to Plymouth PM departure.

Concur, I must have accidentally checked the wrong day’s (sat or sun) CWNs earlier.

There are still several trains that run Fridays Only, including the 1846 London Euston to Preston. Indeed it seems likely that this will be extended to Blackpool North from the December timetable - even though it retains its status as a Fridays Only service.

Not on the GWR West of England. In fact the opposite is true there but there are good reasons for that.

I know VTWC set up their diagrams so that on Fridays certain services are 11 car pendos, meaning others which are 11 on mon - Thurs are a 9 car on Friday. I can't recall at the moment which though.

Same on TPE on Fridays, less morning commuter traffic but you see a lot more leisure travel along with an earlier starting and longer commute on Friday afternoon mixed in with the hen/stag parties, military personnel, uni students and weekend home or away yravelling

In my experience of commuting, Monday was the busiest morning peak to London. Friday evening peak out of London the busiest (and spread out) of the evening ones through the week.
