Given that either of those train lengths would be too long for the platforms at St Pancras, assuming that 25/26 metre AT-300 vehicles are being ordered, I strongly suspect that you're going to be disappointed.
Have they actually done modelling for 26m carriage clearances yet?

Curious what the plan is for Long Eaton and Beeston now - assuming uniform 9 car sets some people will have to walk a very long way down the train.
I may be naive, but the platforms at Beeston look very extendable at the London end. Plenty of land, no signals. Perhaps requiring a rebuild of the footbridge (which looks pretty dilapidated anyway).

Maybe but the last NR enhancement plan published under CP5 showed a change in scope in that MML Upgrade Programme would not extend platforms North of Leicester. Of course that could change back again...

A shadow has been cast over the future of one of Britain's oldest train manufacturers after Dutch rail giant Abellio prepared to snub Bombardier by handing a £600m rail contract to Japan's Hitachi.

The move will come as a blow to around 1,600 skilled workers at Bombardier’s Derby rail plan as the new operator of the East Midlands franchise will look outside the region to build the trains.

The East Midlands order is expected to be delivered from Hitachi’s Newton Aycliffe site in County Durham instead, The Telegraph can reveal.

Abellio is expected to formally announce the decision next week, sources said.

Abellio, which is owned by the Dutch state, was awarded the East Midlands train contract...

Abellio, which is owned by the Dutch state, was awarded the East Midlands train contract earlier this year. Transport secretary Chris Grayling picked the company ahead of Stagecoach and Arriva, both of which were deemed to have submitted “non-compliant” bids. Stagecoach and Arriva are suing the Government over the decision.

In June, the Telegraph revealed that Abellio was “considering options” to move the East Midlands train franchise headquarters away from Derby.

The decision to hand Hitachi the contract is another headache for Bombardier, which also missed out on a £2.5bn deal to build Underground trains for London’s Piccadilly Line. It has launched action against Transport for London over its decision to give the contract to German engineering giant Siemens.

The history of the Derby plant can be traced back to the late 19th century. It has been owned by Bombardier since 2001 but has been forced into a series of staff cuts in recent years.

In 2011 it slashed almost half of its then 3,000-strong workforce after missing out on a contract to build more than 1,000 train carriages for Thameslink.

Hitachi was awarded a £1.5bn deal to make high-speed Azuma trains that will operate on the East Coast mainline. Modelled on Japan’s bullet train, delivery was delayed by five months after problems integrating them with signalling equipment.

Abellio, Hitachi and Bombardier declined to comment on the decision.

Earlier on Friday competition regulators opened an investigation into the Government's decision to hand Abellio the East Midlands rail network.

The Competition and Markets Authority raised concerns that passengers could face higher fares because some of its East Midlands services will overlap with Greater Anglia, another franchise run by Abellio.

"Thousands of people rely on this route, so it’s crucial that passengers don’t suffer as a result of reduced competition," said the CMA's Joel Bamford. "If the franchise is awarded to Abellio as currently planned, we’re concerned passengers could face increased prices."

An Abellio spokesman said: “We have co-operated fully with the CMA throughout their investigation and welcome their findings. We will work with the CMA to address their concerns on the Norwich to Ely and Ely to Thetford routes.”

Getting real tired of seeing that every time a contract doesn't go their way.
Similarly, the usual scary reference to the Competion and Markets authority (CMA) that gets mentioned with every incoming franchisee, always written as though it’s a massive issue...

This news about Hitachi having the contact will presumably mean Class 800 / 802 stock - I'll be delighted at that at least!

I'm looking forward to seeing the December 2020 timetable, there's a lot of things to fix. Eg the wonky EMT service patterns at stations south of Leicester.

I hope the new infrastructure should present some flexibility to do this. The 4th line being restored south of Kettering might assist with pathing. The new 12-car Corby services might reduce the need for some of the Thameslink fasts to Bedford (if it helps). More doors on new stock may help dwell times.

I’m sure Bedford will keep the full Thameslink service as now, there’s really no evidence whatsoever that Corby electric services will alter fast Thameslink numbers.

£600m is a lot. Assuming a general price of ~£2.2m for a class 802 coach, that's enough for 272 coaches - so around 30 9 car sets!

It depends if it is just the acquisition price or if maintenance is included as well. They'll always quote the highest value in the press stuff!

If you can call London to Nottingham intercity I suppose. The western making do with primarily 5 car sets so see no reason why Midland should automatically get 9 cars.

In fairness, the GWML is seeing a doubling of frequency from London to Bristol, an increase in frequency from London to places like Cheltenham too.

The MML is stuck with the frequency of services from London to Leicester and Nottingham,/ Sheffield (because Thameslink effectively strangles any scope for additional paths - e.g. St Pancras having no departures for Sheffield between 16:58 and 18:01 IIRC) so we can only see a capacity increase by longer trains

I wonder if it's a bit like the way that newspapers make football transfers look bigger than they are by including the wages over the five year duration of the contract (rather than just quoting the fee paid from the buying club to the selling club)?

Just a side note, maybe if interest; it’s a possibility that 222104 is going to be painted into the new EMR livery for the relaunch. The set is currently in serveral pieces at Etches Park due to a long standing leak with the dishwasher. I’m told there is a good chance it will be painted into the new livery.
