The first photo is the rule on using a day rover with another ticket.

The second photo is the map of where a GM Wayfarer priced £14 can be used.

It states the train does not need to call where one ticket ends and another finishes. So does it mean a GM Wayfarer, along with a Sheffield-Grindleford CDR, can be used to travel from Sheffield to Manchester? And be valid on a train that passes through but doesn’t stop at Grindleford?

It states simply “another ticket” which I assume to mean any ticket not another area ticket. I also ask because last time I looked the Sheffield to Manchester CDR had been withdrawn (except on Northern) meaning a sudden rise in cost of about £5 for a trans pennine day trip between Sheffield & Manchester on faster trains.

And furthermore I’ve noted the GM Wayfarer could in fact be further to Chorley or Warrington. Making for very good savings if you add a third ticket to a day trip from Sheffield to Blackpool or Liverpool.

Yes and yes.

Any ticket is "a ticket".

Yes the cost of ticket between Sheffield and Manchester/Stockport has risen to a ludicrously high amount, but there are many ways around this. You've found one of them.

Yes; some train companies are very unhappy at this, but they are forced - at least for now - to accept PTE-priced fares that are far cheaper than the fares they price themselves.

You can combine the Wayfarer with another area-based ticket or just a single. Transpennine IMO have been a bit funny with using this split as I've used it before, but EMT have been fine with it.

...whereas in my case it was an EMT guard who insisted that Wayfarer validity ended at Hazel Grove and wouldn't be convinced (even by a printed copy of the Wayfarer map) otherwise.

Probably confused it with the CountyCard or TrainCard initially, but after you showed them the map it's inexcusable really...

You can try at Sheffield station. Pot luck if you get a suitable member of staff. Else - look for conductor on Hope Valley stopper.

I live in Sheffield, how can I get a GM Wayfarer before I travel?

I travelled to Meadowhall when I lived in Sheff - the Sheff ticket office refused to do Northern advance tickets saying it wasn't possible, amongst various other rovers that either didn't exist or they couldn't/wouldn't issue.

That's normal behaviour for Sheffield ticket office.

Sheffield ticket office refused to sell me a GM Wayfarer because of "Greater Manchester propaganda" whatever that is. They haven't refused anything else yet but this is the same ticket office that said it was my fault if their TVMs had a fit and wouldn't do ToD due to a fault and that's what I get for booking with someone who wasn't EMT, so expect to be disappointed by them.

It resulted in a TPE guard getting the revenue for one and even having the rules on splitting with a GM Wayfarer explained to him! He was actually quite happy to be taught something new.

Sheffield ticket office once refused to let me reserve a seat from Cheltenham to Exeter as for the second part of my journey down from Sheffield, from Cheltenham to Exeter I was planning on using a South West Rover. I already an Advance ticket with reservation from Sheffield to Cheltenham but as I hadn’t already purchased my South West Rover they refused to issue me with a seat reservation. I went to Meadowhall and the very friendly lady there sorted it out straight away and even made my reservations in the same seat for the entire journey.

But indeed that’s Sheffield for you! It’s not an EMT thing because I find the staff at Chesterfield, Alfreton and Nottingham very helpful. Chesterfield and Alfreton are very helpful and co-operative when buying split tickets involving Derbyshire Wayfarers.

Don't waste your time with Sheffield ticket office. I get my GM Wayfarers from the local corner shop via their PayPoint system.

As to use, I have had problems with a couple of EMT guards - never had an issue on TPE.

In the unlikely event that you're questioned (I've had it once from a TPE guard who just didn't know how it worked but was apologetic when I explained, I go from GM land to Sheffield every other week on average), refer them to 14.2 of whatever they call the conditions of carriage nowadays. Store a copy on your phone if you like

As others have said I've previously only had the option of Sheffield ticket office roulette, do you know if GM Wayfarers can be sold from PayPoints in Sheffield or are they only available locally (ie Manchester) at least you can get the Derbyshire Wayfarers posted to you, would be even better to have a similar scheme for GM ones.

I'm never too sure on validity of tickets on whether the train has to call at the station tickets where the change over, as i often use combo of GM Wayfarer & another ticket to the GM Wayfarer boundary, as my one is, i have Merseytravel issued disabled ENCTS pass, valid on the train until Newton Le Willows, then i use GM Wayfarer to Manchester, on the fast TPE i tend to err on safety & make sure the train calls at NLW, as i'm not sure if the combo is valid for TPE that calls at Lea Green then non stop to Manchester, as GM Wayfarer isn't valid that far,

14.2 of the NRCOT allows you to use a Wayfarer and Merseytravel concessionary pass on any Manchester to Liverpool train (via Newton-le-Willows,) whether it stops there or not, so perfectly fine on the TPE that stops only at Lea Green.

I get them from my local corner shop in Sheffield, so see no technical reason why other PayPoint outlets in the city cannot sell them. When I bought the first one though, it took me and the shop assistant together a good few minutes to find them on the system - possibly in some outlets the staff might be less willing to search for something they had never heard of.

A slight detour, but does anyone know if the GM Wayfarer ticket validity might be extended to Warrington West when it opens?

But 14.2 does NOT apply if you have two point-to-point tickets, is that correct?

I very much doubt it, I can’t imagine the powers that be extending validity in areas that are already outside the TfGM area.

The tickets are not even valid on the direct line between Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan NW, you have to travel via Manchester.

So far, in Sheffield, I have tried my two local shops and the assistants don't evenknow where to start, any clues? or which shop do you use?

I don't know if all PayPoint set ups are the same, but on the one I have seen they need to go to the ticketing section and then the transport part of that. The wayfarers are listed under TfGM - that was the bit where they most needed my input the first time as that string of letters would be meaningless to most people outside of Greater Manchester (and to a good number within).
