Namely, 1C27 Padd- Bristol TM and 1U28 Padd- Bristol TM. These are timed at Swindon tonight at 20:00 / 20;05

I had a nosy at IRIS earlier today. I think that I spotted this. Am I going insane? Dunno. Maybe one of them is supposed to go further than TM.

Probably not! I might be there already! I might have misread IRIS. Not hard to do.

What did I get wrong/miss?

This looks like two trains from Padd to TM about FIVE minutes apart...

Is it?

One goes via Bath and the other via Bristol Parkway.

That'll explain that! Cheers!

When I was a lad, Padd - TM always went through Bath. Unless they was digging the tracks up.

Still, my question is a valid one. Two trains from one terminus to the same station, five minutes apart?

Quality!

All go via different routes but every hour Crewe has 3 trains within 5 mins to Euston (xx56 vt non stop to Milton Keynes, xx01 vt via Brum, xx01 lnr via Stoke)

I might have to add a caveat. Trains outbound from the London end will see what happens. I can see that suburban stuff near to London will cause me yedaches. I am not on the same wavelength as you lot.....

Not quite as close as the Crewe examples above but with the Norwich in 90 some trains are leaving Norwich at xx:00 and xx:03 to London Liverpool Street.

If ex London out of Euston this Friday and next Friday whilst Acton Grange is shut there is an 1843, 1846, 1849 and 1852 departure from Euston, all terminating at Crewe. They run every week but the 1846 normally goes to Preston

Are there still two trains to Loughborough from St Pancras? Used to be xx:25 and xx:30.

I don't think so any more but the 10:05 St Pancras to Nottingham and the 10:31 St Pancras to Sheffield do still arrive within 5 mins of each other at Loughborough.

How do you define "terminus"? These trains are 12 minutes apart at Paddington, so does your example not qualify?

If you mean from any station, then there are a huge number examples all over the network, including at Clapham Junction (which has the same status as your Swindon example, namely not being a terminus for the trains in question but being a terminus for other trains).

Norwich departures from Liverpool Street at 11:00/11:02, 17:00/17:02, & 19:00/19:02.

How far ahead does the xx:00 get to when the xx:02 is just pulling out of Liverpool Street?

How are they routed between Liverpool Street and Stratford?

Sundays on the ECML see a couple of tight gaps in trains to Newcastle. There's a 1000 to Aberdeen and 1003 to Edinburgh from London, then in the evening an 1827 to Newcastle and 1830 to Edinburgh. There's also an 0922 Newcastle followed by an 0930 Edinburgh.

Best frequency the line sees all week yet I'd wager with it being Sunday it's still not enough!

Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester is another one with closely clustered departures - eg 1351 to Oxford Road, 1356 to Victoria and 1356 to Oxford Road today.

Later on in the day, there's 1715 to MCO, 1718 to MCV, 1719 to MCO, 1725 to MCV.

York has 11-58 and 12-02 to Kings Cross - stopper tucking in immediately behind non stop. I was recently on one that was almost in parallel as the train from Newcastle was 3 late and stopper went up Leeds lines to Colton.

Near a bunch of sheds that aren't 66s.

You could take this a bit further and say three trains to Ipswich depart at 1100/1102/1104 and the same for all other hours where Norwich in 90 runs. First being fast, second being semi fast and third being stopping (even still not that slow).

York also has 1358, 1402 and 1406 to Kings Cross. It is not uncommon for the 58 and 02 to run parallel.

(The first is the XC from Bournemouth, the second the VT from London.)

Sunday nights from London Euston have a 2005 and a 2008 to Liverpool Lime Street.
Sticking with Lime St, not spectacular in the context of this thread but still better than anything in the weekday timetable, Sundays see an 0818 Lime St-Euston closely followed by 0838 doing the same...both usually busy too. The 2008 coming back is a good tip as it’s often a lot quieter than the 2005!

What got me was a 10 minute gap in Euston - Manchester Piccadilly departures first thing on a Sunday morning, 0810 and 0820 - they arrive in Manchester 7 minutes apart. The next one is then not until 0920!

The 0810 is essentially a relief overlaid onto the hourly Sunday morning timetable which starts with the 0816 Liverpool. Similar situation on the ECML.

Deighton and Mirfield have departures to Huddersfield 6/7 minutes apart, followed by a 53/54 minute wait for the next one......

Given that the ex Castleford train is the one 5 minutes behind perhaps that service would get more pax in that direction if they were more spaced out?

Around Wheeler St/Bethnal Green. Signal spacing is very close departing Liverpool St even on the main with speeds going 15/30/40/35/60 then 70 at Mile End through Stratford & 90 from Maryland. The 1902 will be on greens until Stratford then YY which usually changes to greens on approach. We where doing this all the way to Chelmsford last week. I wasn't letting that Ni90 out of my sight.
