With Northern's new trains entering service tomorrow what's going to happen to the 158s that have recently been used on Barrow/Windermere services, what services are they going to be used on now?

Will they be used to strengthen other Northern services?

Despite all the units which have, in recent times, been cascaded from other operators to Northern (both diesel and electric), short-forming of trains has remained an all-day experience, most days. Whether the introduction into service of an additional 24 carriages (i.e. eight 3-car units) is going to change that, is arguable. The sudden surfeit of DMUs may simply result in a start to the withdrawal of the Pacers.

As to the 158s, it would seem most likely that they will return to East side services, from whence they came. They are, of course, all still allocated to Leeds (Neville Hill).

Possibly - or possibly to free stock for an acceleration of the refurbishment programme?

There's nothing obvious to take them away from Barrow yet so don't expect any quick moves... my guess is they'll be used to fill in the gaps in the current 158 diagrams where 150s have been appearing every day, allowing 150s to be utilised elsewhere

I hope this is the case, 150s on Leeds - Nottingham aren't ideal and the S&C has had a lot of short formations lately due to lack of 158s

Virtually everything east of Leeds is 142/144 or 150 at the moment. So a few nice 158s would be welcome (as we're probably unlikely to see 170s or 195s on the Hull, Selby and York lines until they're as old as the Pacers).

Least they should have one unit with tables. I do remember seeing loads of 158s at Man Vic - is this not the case anymore?

Yes still plenty of 158's on the Calder Valley but those two particular trains are diagrammed for 156+150

Given the shortage of 158s at the moment is this only 1 or 2 out of the 12 units currently required for Leeds - Southport?
It will only be one or two - the diagram i've seen with a 158 shown is the 20:21 LDS-SOP, which becomes 23:10 SOP-WGW; it then sits in the sidings at Wigan overnight and then attached to a 142 to work the 06:08 to Stalybridge

The York-Leeds and Leeds-York stoppers (2Txx) are formed of the units at the York end that arrive from Blackpool, as far as I have seen they are almost entirely 3 car 158s. The Leeds-Selby service seems most often to be a 158 2 car on one diagram and a 144 3 car on the other.

They have visited there on several occasions just recently. I could try and turn up a post relating to unit, train and date.

That post would clearly be incorrect as 158s do not operate to/from Southport.

There have been several reports of 158s visiting Southport on Leeds services since the May Timetable. One such example is 158796 working 1J05 0721 from Leeds on June 7th

I posted a link to a Southport-Leeds on Friday which I caught, formed of a 156+150, and I posted a link to a Leeds-Man Vic on Saturday which I caught, formed of 158902. So I didn't witness a 158 come from Southport :D

How do you know? I'm informed by a source I would trust that 158s are not route cleared and indeed the crews that sign 158s do not sign Southport and vice versa.

158’s are definitely cleared to Southport, and both Wigan and Manchester Victoria depots sign them (not all links though) who work the majority of the Leeds-Southport services between Man Vic and Southport, so there’s no reason why it can’t happen.

They are route cleared and the crews sign them. Wigan and Vic men sign both traction and route.

Your source is wrong.

Yours, a driver that signed the route and traction.
