Hey guys, needed some advice so I'm 18 years old I have my PTS ICI OLEC 1 AND DCCR AND have worked with a railway company for a few months now, I have recently applied for a job at network rail and meet every requirement expect for not having a driving license, i passed the online test and it is now under consideration, wondering what my chances are of getting the job as this would change my life

If the entry requirements state that a driving licence is essential criteria, then you’ll probably not get behind an interview. If you’re close to gaining a driving licences, you may be lucky I guess?

The driving license was only desirable

What's the role you've applied for. I applied for a role at GTR, didn't have everything in the desirable section and just about met requirements and managed to bag the role so desirable isn't everything but I'd assume it probably depends highly on the role you've gone for. Either way, don't look too much into this. If I had someone who was a great fit for a role but didn't have the driving licence and someone who wasn't that good but had a driving licence, I'd pick the person without the driving licence because the ultimate goal for the employer is to hire someone who would be the best fit for the role.

You'll be fine. I doubt you won't get to the interviews because of not holding a driving licence. bear in mind the list of desirable there is very small so I'd take it that they are pretty much just looking for the requirements.

Personally, if I was you. If I was given an interview for this role I would mention it in your interview that you are working towards gaining a driving license. Even if you grab one or two lessons before your interview.

Them knowing that you are currently taking lessons could make the difference between landing that dream role or not.

You have to put yourself in their shoes. If candidate A meets all the requirements while candidate B meets everything par from the driving license. Who would you pick?

Would you be willing to learn to drive? If so, by telling the interviewer you’re showing them you’re willing to learn new things. At you age and with the criteria only being desirable you have nothing to lose.

I think the only issue is if there’s another candidate who has a driving licence they’d be more likely to be offered the job.

It’s relatively rare but there are operatives out there that don’t drive, either because they’ve not passed their test, have a automatic only licence, or have held their licence for under a year (special authority needs obtaining to drive if this is the case).

I would suggest getting a licence as soon as you can, and if you get an interview mention that you feel you’ll be passing soon (if that’s true), but it doesn’t have to mean you’re going to be binned automatically. Even if you get the job keep aiming to pass, it’ll make getting to work at odd times easier and operatives tend to do more driving than any other grade - operative driving frees up others to plan and think about the work when on the move.

I'm 17, and my dream job is to work in the railway industry. I managed to successfully get a job with GTR and I didn't have everything in the desirable section but I gave it my all at the interviews and really sold myself. I'm sure you'll get an interview and when you do, just sell yourself and see how everything goes from there.

However I agree with alxndr, get a license as soon as you can as it will show NR that you will do whatever is needed to do your best in the role and will make things easier for you!
