I have an advanced single for tomorrow from Tweedbank to Aberdeen - my Edinburgh to Aberdeen train is at 12.30 and I have a seat reservation. I had planned to get the 1058 from Tweedbank to Edinburgh but will now struggle to get to Tweedbank for that time. My question is, is my connecting ticket valid on the 0828 from Tweedbank allowing me 3 hours in Edinburgh?

Yes you can travel from Tweedbank earlier as this is not a reserved service but you can't leave the station at Edinburgh, this would be a break of journey and not permitted.

You are supposed to use an 'appropriate connecting service' but this is not defined anywhere public, it is generally interpreted to mean any non-reservable service.

I may be wrong about this, but I don't think Edinburgh has barriers. Not sure how anyone can be prevented from breaking their journey. Or, conversely, how one could prove that in a 3 hour wait one has not left the station.

The Tweedbank train getting in might or might not have barriers but the one to Aberdeen probably will - since I'm getting my booked service to Aberdeen, I don't think this will be an issue. The furthest I'm likely to go would be the Wetherspoons at the top of the ramp for a coffee and something to eat - there definitely isn't any barrier for access to and from the station itself.
Many thanks for confirming I can use the earlier train from Tweedbank.
